Electric Shock Consider how the following was addressed in the video: Who’s social and behavioral standards are being met Privacy and consent 4.09 - Least Restrictive Procedures Effective treatment vs. humane treatment Take 10 minutes and answer the following: 1. Do you think Harry’s preferences were taken into consideration? No, not at all. At this stage he preferred having his restraints. 2. Who selected the treatment goals? From who’s perspective were those goals selected? The therapists and from their perspective. 3. Considering the three interventions discussed in the video, do you think those were the least restrictive treatments?
Each treatment was restrictive. He was rewarded with restraints for not engaging in SIB 4. What could have been a different course of treatment that would be have been less restrictive? I’m not really sure. Try to fade the use of arm restraints as a reinforcer since it is not putting the behavior on extinction. Breakout group- Alishia Glover, Mariah Diaz, Megan Rice, Nathalie Bencosme Breakout Group Group Members: Read each scenario in your breakout group and answer each question with details that demonstrates critical thinking and knowledge of the ethics code. Scenario 1 : A family always has tea and cookies available when you arrive at their home for therapy with their child. You know that it is a custom in their culture to share a cup of tea with anyone who enters the home. Jane, the BCBA, accepts the tea and drinks it while going over last week’s data with the family. Is there anything wrong with this strategy? Answer the following: Outline the risks and benefits of accepting the tea and rejecting the tea in this scenario. For each risk identified for accepting the tea, list at least one step that can be taken to reduce the risk. Scenario 2 : An RBT post the following question on the ABA Skill Share Facebook page: “I am working with a 5 year old boy with Aspergers in the home and his family really wants him to improve his social interactions with peers. He doesn’t have any siblings and there aren’t any children in his neighborhood that he plays with. What can I do to help him learn social interactions? This is the main area of concern for treatment. All of his other skills are fine and he doesn’t have major behavior problems. ” Answer the following: Contrive an appropriate response. Scenario 3 : Marcus is a 10-year-old from a divorced family who was physically and verbally abused while living with his alcoholic mother. Protective Services removed him from the home and placed him with his biological father. A BCBA has been assigned to work in the home several hours per week, Marcus has been prescribed medication for hyperactivity, but his dad does not give it to him on a consistent basis. The dad recognizes Marcus’ behavior problems, including running away and noncompliance, but has refused parent training. He says he does not need anyone telling him how to handle his child’s behavior. When the BCBA comes to the home,
the dad uses the visit as a chance to have a free babysitter and will go work in the garage and he has even gone to the store. Answer the following: It feels like it is impossible to get any cooperation with behavioral services in this home, but can the BCBA justify leaving this child? Exit Ticket : Provide 2 pieces of feedback for ICS. 1 thing that you like and one thing that you would change/add. I like the engaging thought-provoking conversation, and seeing the videos. I appreciate how you show the topics are relevant and what they look like in real life. Taking a short break mid-class is also really helpful. Some people have seemed confused about what we are to be discussing in the break out sessions, but I don’t think there is anything you could do differently.
