Assessment & Improvement Plan 2 Writing Self-Assessment and Improvement Plan The purpose of this paper is to determine the writer’s strengths, challenges, and to create a realistic writing improvement plan. Capella University’s Writing Standards consist of five skills identified as POETS skills. POETS is the acronym used to highlight the writing skills Purpose, Organization, Evidence, Tone, and Sentence Structure. Capella’s Writing Self- Assessment and Improvement Plan Media was used to identify the writer’s strengths and challenges. Strengths The Writing Self-Assessment and Improvement Plan Media identified the writer’s strengths as purpose, evidence and APA, tone, and sentence structure. The purpose section was scored as strong and to strengthen this skill time will be spent reviewing details of different writing assignments and additional requirements and considerations for assignment types. Evidence and APA was scored as strong, and resources will be used to continue to prevent plagiarism and correctly use in-text citations. Tone along with sentence structure was scored as strong, and the writer will continue to prioritize clear communication and using an academic tone. Challenges The Writing Self-Assessment and Improvement Plan Media identified the writer’s challenges as organization, writing process and support, and advanced writing skills. The Organization section was scored as adequate. To improve organization, the writer will reference the MEAL Plan and Writing Strategies to establish stronger assignment structure. The writer will benefit from planning and organizing their assignment instead of skipping the planning and revision steps of writing. The writing process and support section was scored as adequate. The writing process will be improved when the writer prewrites and revises their work instead of procrastinating. Advanced writing skills was scored
Assessment & Improvement Plan 3 adequately as well. Using the resources suggested in the improvement plan media will help elevate the writer’s score to strong from adequate. Improvement Plan In conclusion, using the writing self-assessment and improvement plan media highlighted the writer’s challenges to improve. The writing center is available to the writer and needs to be utilized early when planning a paper’s direction to improve the organization of the paper. Using a calendar to support the writing process to stay on task and be consistent with the paper’s organization. To improve the writing process and support the writer will submit a draft for review from safe assign and Grammarly. The writer additionally will use the scored rubric and instructor feedback when planning future papers to improve quality writing.
