7710 ICS 7 Class Activity Guide Katie Ramirez Activity 1: Milgram Experiment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOUEC5YXV8U&t=2s 1. Was informed consent given? No 2. What information was given to participants? That one person would be giving another electric shocks 3. What information would need to be given in order to be truly informed? That certain information would be withheld to not interfere with the results 4. Do you think it's possible to conduct this research with informed consent and get the same results? No, people would not behave the same if they knew there wasn’t another person receiving the shocks Activity 2: Read the article: NOTES FROM A RADICAL BEHAVIORIST: IS IT MORALLY DEFENSIBLE TO USE THE DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED AS GUINEA PIGS? https://link.springer.com/article/10.5210/bsi.v11i2.90 (download article from link above or the file in updates and handouts) List three takeaways from the article: 1. I learned that a debriefing is not normally given to developmentally disabled people 2. Offering an hour of treatment for an hour of participation would be valuable in theory, but the cost could be a hinderance 3. Adding a contingency on evidence of a social conscience would have the possibility of giving back a great deal to the community with successful treatments. Activity 3: Listen to this podcast episode https://anchor.fm/beautiful-humans/episodes/Ep-29-Colonial-Research-Practices-with-Dr-- Malika-Pritchett-el193k
In thinking about the article you read for the Unit 4 assignment, write 2-3 sentences about how this the article and this podcast episode relate to each other. Using the participants for data and showing how things work without truly benefitting the client. How do we define benefits? The article did not address how the client benefitted from the negative reinforcement for food refusal. Yes the research worked, but was it necessary? How was it helpful for the client in the short and long term? How could the authors have changed their research methodology to be in alignment with participatory research? They could have given the child the opportunity to refuse treatment or to stop treatment at any time. Exit Ticket : Do you think there are any issues with the way research is conducted in behavior analysis? I think there should be more comparisons related to research conducted in child development, brain development, etc. I do think there should be more long-term research done to determine long term effects on a person.
