Lucia Costales 10/22/23 Stress Busters Report #2 PSY 470 – Fall 2023 (Dr. Beals) 1. Name: What is the name of the stress buster that you chose to do? Eat Stress Reducing Foods 2. Define: Define the topic/concept of the stress buster in your own words (e.g., flow, mindfulness, gratitude, optimism, exercising, healthy eating). Eating stress-reducing foods is a concept that focuses on using dietary choices to manage and alleviate stress. It involves selecting and consuming specific foods that are believed to have properties or nutrients that can help the body better cope with the physical and emotional effects of stress. The idea is to leverage nutrition as a tool to promote relaxation, reduce stress-related hormones, and support overall mental and physical well-being. 3. Why: Why did you choose this stress buster? I chose this stress buster because there is scientific evidence to support the idea that certain foods can influence our stress levels and overall mental health. This stress buster addresses stress management from a different angle than physical activities like exercise or mindfulness techniques. 4. Specific: Reflect upon how you feel after eating “junk” food versus eating these healthier food options, especially regarding your stress level. Indicate whether you chose to eat a stress-reducing food instead of “junk” food when stressed (this buster) or if you incorporated stress-reducing foods into your daily intake (below). What is one food that you added to your intake? Eating junk food, which is often high in sugar, saturated fats, and refined carbohydrates, can lead to a temporary spike in energy, followed by a crash. I usually would have mood swings, irritability, and increased stress levels when eating junk food. On the other hand, consuming healthier food options, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods rich in essential nutrients, help regulate blood sugar levels, support stable mood, and contribute to reduced stress over time. Incorporating stress-reducing foods into my daily diet has a positive impact on their overall well-being and stress levels. I added foods like fatty fish, dark leafy greens, and berries to support stress management. 5. Stress: Explain how this stress buster influenced your stress levels. (For example, did it increase or decrease them, or did they stay the same?) What do you think was responsible for the change or lack thereof? I definitely didn’t feel as stressed this past week. I believe it is because stress-reducing foods are often rich in essential nutrients like antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. These
Lucia Costales 10/22/23 nutrients can support brain health, reduce inflammation, and help regulate mood, all of which can contribute to lower stress levels. Healthy food choices can help stabilize blood sugar levels as well which helps lower stress levels. 6. Learn: What did you learn for your “stress toolbox” for stress management from this Stress buster? I learned the importance of being mindful about what you eat and how it can impact your mental well-being. Learning about the nutritional value of foods and their effects on mood and stress can be a valuable skill. 7. Enjoy: What was most enjoyable about this stress buster? I love being creative in the kitchen so I enjoyed incorporating a variety of delicious and nutritious foods into new recipes. Many stress-reducing foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, can be prepared in appetizing ways, providing a sense of culinary satisfaction. 8. Challenge: What was most challenging about this stress buster? I found the hardest part of this stress buster is that access to healthier food was more expensive. Groceries were a challenge for me as I am on a tight budget. 9. Future: Would you participate in this stress buster again in the future? Why or why not? Yes! I would definitely continue to participate in this stress buster. I felt so good mentally and physically for the rest of the day after incorporating these foods into my diet. I also love learning about the benefits of food so this was so much fun. I think I will try to incorporate this stress buster into my everyday life from now on.
