Social Skills and SEL Development Students needs social skills in order to establish and sustain healthy relationships with other people. A lot of these abilities are essential for forming and maintaining friendships. Children who fail to acquire appropriate social skills have a lower probability of completing school, becoming employed, and becoming well-adjusted adults. Elksnin (1998). Social interactions don't always go as planned, therefore when problems develop, students need to be able to use the right strategies to develop SEL skills, such as conflict resolution. Additionally, it is critical for students to possess empathy, as this enables them to react to the emotions of others in a compassionate and understanding manner. These strategies can be used in these social skills to develop SEL skills for ninth grade students: encouraging everyone to participate, paraphrasing what others have said, seeking collaboration, and asking for justification for ideas. For students, the social skill of encouraging everyone to participate means creating an inclusive and welcoming environment where every individual feels valued and comfortable sharing their thoughts, ideas, and opinions. It's important to ensure that no one is left out or feels ignored during discussions or group activities. In doing so, you promote diversity and ensure that all voices are heard, which can lead to more creative and comprehensive problem-solving. This skill helps students become more aware of the feelings and perspectives of their peers, fostering empathy and understanding. Encouraging participation strengthens communication and collaboration, which are vital for building positive relationships. Strategies to develop SEL skills as the teacher, model inclusive behavior by actively inviting all students to share their thoughts during class discussions or group activities. This sets a positive example for students to follow. Collaboratively establish a set of group norms or ground rules with your students at the
beginning of the school year. Ensure that these norms emphasize the importance of encouraging everyone to participate. Paraphrasing what others have said means rephrasing or summarizing what someone else has shared to show that you've actively listened and understood their perspective. It's a way to demonstrate respect and empathy for the speaker while clarifying their ideas. Paraphrasing also helps ensure that everyone is on the same page during a discussion or conversation. Paraphrasing requires students to reflect on their own understanding and actively engage with others' ideas. It fosters awareness of others' feelings and viewpoints, contributing to a more empathetic and supportive classroom environment. To develop SEL skills, conduct role-playing activities in the classroom where students take turns paraphrasing what others have said. Provide feedback and guidance to help them improve their paraphrasing skills. The teacher can also offer sentence starters like, "What I heard you say was..." or "If I understand correctly, you're saying..." to help students get started with paraphrasing until they become more comfortable doing it independently. Seeking elaboration means asking questions or requesting additional information when someone shares their thoughts or ideas. It shows that you're genuinely interested in what others have to say and helps deepen your understanding of their perspective. This skill promotes active and meaningful dialogue. Seeking elaboration demonstrates a thoughtful approach to understanding complex issues and making well-informed decisions. It strengthens communication and the ability to engage in more meaningful conversations, contributing to the development of positive relationships. Strategies to develop SEL skills can include teaching students different questioning techniques such as open-ended questions or follow-up questions to encourage them to seek elaboration during discussions. give each other feedback on their questioning skills. This can be done through peer assessments or group discussions, helping students learn from each other's strengths. Asking for justification for ideas means requesting reasons or evidence to support someone's ideas or opinions. It demonstrates critical thinking and a desire for logical, well- founded arguments. This skill promotes deeper understanding and constructive, evidence-based conversations. By asking for justification, students learn to make informed decisions based on evidence and sound reasoning. It encourages students to critically evaluate their own and others' ideas, leading to a better understanding of their values and beliefs. A strategy that can be used to develop SEL skills is to organize Socratic seminars or debates where students are encouraged to ask for justifications from their peers. Provide guidance on how to frame these questions effectively. Another strategy is to incorporate activities that emphasize the use of evidence to support arguments. For example, in literature or history classes, students can be asked to provide textual evidence to justify their interpretations or conclusions. These social skills and corresponding SEL strategies can greatly benefit 9th-grade students by enhancing their ability to collaborate, communicate effectively, and think critically, ultimately contributing to their personal and academic growth.
