BEHAVIOR CONFERENCE Taylor Henderson ECE 201: Intro to Early Childhood Behavior Management Colleen Murphy November 20, 2023
OBSERVING BRYSON I observed Bryson over the past couple of weeks. Bryson is a very creative kid who loves to build structures with foam blocks during playtime. Bryson has great qualities and is a fun-loving child. He also has qualities that need to be worked on, which is why we are having this conference. 20XX Pitch deck title 2
PROCESS OF OBSERVING BRYSON STEP 1: First, I make a checklist of behaviors to look for during the observation, such as: Did he share? Did he communicate with other children? Did he listen to me? STEP 2: Next, I hold the observation. This is where I collect data and record Bryson’s behaviors. STEP 3: Here, I analyze the data I receive from the observation. I will see how many times a behavior occurred. STEP 4: After counting how many times behaviors occurred, I make notes on if they are good or bad behaviors. STEP 5: After gathering and analyzing all the data, I made the behavior plan based on what strengths Bryson has, and what behaviors he needs to work on. 20XX Pitch deck title 3

CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS Bryson struggled with some things during the observation I held for him. One behavior Bryson struggled with was sharing. He would try to take blocks from the other children and tell them “no” to placing blocks on the structure. Once he was told that he should let the other children have a turn with the blocks, he was more inclined to share. 20XX Pitch deck title 4
POSITIVE-GUIDANCE STRATEGIES SHARING A way I got Bryson to share was by simply telling him it was time to let the other children have a turn. He was quick to share after I told him to. DIFFERENT RESPONSE “Instead of simply telling your students what they’re doing is wrong, turn the moment into a learning opportunity and teach them better ways to handle the situation in the future” (ChildCare Education Institute, 2022). I asked Bryson how he thinks the other children feel when they don't get to play with the toys. Questions like this will make Bryson rethink his behavior. POSITIVE LANGUAGE “Acknowledge appropriate behavior such as being ready to work and working well in groups. Give effective praise for the effort and improvements students have made” (Coathup, 2021). When he shared the blocks, I said something like, “Great job. I’m sure they appreciate you sharing with them.” 20XX Pitch deck title 5
BEHAVIORAL THEORY The theory that aligns with my methods and strategies for addressing behavior issues is the Reinforcement Theory. The Reinforcement Theory is “a psychological principle suggesting that behaviors are shaped by their consequences and that individual behaviors can be changed through reinforcement, punishment and extinction” (Zola, n.d.). 20XX Pitch deck title 6

PROMOTING POSITIVE AND PROSOCIAL BEHAVIOR One way I promote positive and prosocial behavior in my classroom environment is by building strong relationships with my students and families. Building relationships with students and parents help build their trust in me. Connections between my students and their families also helps them feel comfortable with their child being in my classroom. 20XX Pitch deck title 7
PROMOTING POSITIVE AND PROSOCIAL BEHAVIOR Another way I promote positive and prosocial behavior is by keeping a positive mindset myself. It is difficult for students to learn when they are bored and wish they were doing other things. Keeping the classroom a positive and interesting environment will keep students happy and engaged while learning and interacting with peers. 20XX Pitch deck title 8
COMMUNICATING WITH FAMILIES REMIND APP I communicated with Bryson’s family through the Remind app. The Remind app is a great way to stay in touch with family and let them know about all important upcoming events. I used Remind to keep Bryson’s parents updated on his behavior and how he was doing with other students. IN-PERSON MEETINGS Another way I communicated with Bryson’s family was by having in-person meetings after the observations. After observations, I called in Bryson’s parents and told them about his behaviors and how we can promote positivity. Communicating with Bryson’s family helped them understand what he needs to work on in and out of the classroom. 20XX Pitch deck title 9
