Hannah Pawlewski PSY-230 1-2 Short Paper: Living with Disabilities in the United States: From Segregation to Integration There are many different variables that influence how people with disabilities have been treated over the years. Years ago, most people seen people with disabilities as not being able to live a normal life or always needing assistance to accomplish even the most minor tasks. People with disabilities were not seen as a group of people who could be independent. People lacked the knowledge on how to even assist these individuals with disabilities to live a normal life. Today things are much different as we have more research and experience with these individuals that they are more accepted, but it is hard for them to break the stigma that something is wrong with them instead of them just living a life that is authentic to them. The issues raised in “Lost in Laconia” video are something a lot of state facilities deal with. The lack of funding deprived the residents of services as well as safety. When the children were just dropped off here it can cause irreversible damage for them as they were already not seen as normal and then were castaway as a facility that did not even help them. There was a lack of knowledge on how to properly help these children. Instead, they were left in isolation while they were deemed “ill” and instead of having ways to help or rehabilitate them, these people were thrown aside with the “out of sight out of mind” mentality.
