1. Summary Aileen Wuornos was an American female serial killer who “killed seven men, one of whom was never found” (Crime and Investigation, 2017a). Born February 29, 1956, in Rochester, Michigan to Diane and Leo Pitman, she had an older brother named Keith. However, her childhood was anything but normal and loving. Aileen never knew her father because he was in prison for being “a psychopathic child molester” (Crime and Investigation, 2017b). He eventually killed himself while in prison. Her mother could not handle all the responsibilities, so she abandoned Aileen and Keith into “the care of her parents Lauri and Britta Wuornos” (Crime and Investigation, 2017b). Both Aileen and Keith were physically, mentally, and sexually abused by their grandparents. Aileen got “pregnant in her early teens, and her infant boy was given up for adoption” (Biography Editors, 2020). Her life then got worse from there, from being a prostitute, committing petty crimes to murder. There are many factors that contribute to Aileen’s motivation of murdering seven men. To start with, there were many parental and family risk factors. According to Bartol & Bartol (2020), those risk factors are “abusive and neglectful parenting, divorce, parental drug and/ or alcohol addiction, and parental incarceration” (pg. 32). Not only was she abused physically but she “states she was also abused sexually abused by her grandfather and had sexual relations with her brother” (Biography Editors, 2020). She was often kicked out of her house and made to live in the woods. Her grandmother was an abusive alcoholic. Psychological and behavioral risk factors are that she possibly had the “inability to form meaningful, close trusting relationship, lack of attachment and empathy, and poor self-regulation and impulse control” (Bartol & Bartol, 2020). To survive, Aileen became a prostitute, and made money from hitch hiking and having sex with men. The physical and sexual abuse, and not being able to form loving positive
relationships, tends to show her motivation for killing the seven men she did. The men she killed could of possibly reminded her of the physical and sexual abuse when she was a child. 2. Crime assessment Danny Liggett was born August 17, 1949, in Springfield, Illinois. Danny is “wanted in the murder of a man in New York City on May 7, 1987” (Federal Bureau of Investigation, n.d). Liggett had an educational degree which was a Doctor of education. Helen Torres Liggett’s female acquaintance took Liggett to Kissoon Adams apartment where “Liggett tried to sell Adam’s a piece of jewelry for drug money” (Lungariello, 2022). Liggett then “stabbed the man to death, and then threatened to kill the woman if she told police” (Federal Bureau of Investigation, n.d). Danny is also said to be involved in a shooting in Gainesville, Georgia. Both Wuornos and Liggett committed murder. Wuornos killed seven men and Liggett stabbed one man to death and threatened his female accomplice. Liggett had a good career and college education. Wuornos seems to not have good education and was a prostitute. Both seem to be involved in drugs as Liggett was selling a piece of jewelry to get drug money, and Wuornos did drugs in her lifetime of being a prostitute. While Wuornos was motivated by many different reasons of murdering the men she did. Liggett was likely to be motivated by drugs and money.
