Brittany Lake Handout / Educational Thinker Assignment: Erik Erickson 11 September 2022 About Erick Erickson Born on June 15, 1902, and died on May 12, 1994. German-American developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst. He was retired from Emeritus in 1970 as a Professor. He is known for his theory about psychological development in humans. Educational Ideas Erikson had two main ideas about classroom interactions or classroom settings. One is that adolescence is a delicate time in which individuals search for the truths, values, and standards that are most important to them. Secondly, adults, in particular, are more focused on teachers, mentors, and role models because they have a significant role in helping adolescents develop themselves (Hamman, 2009). Erikson believed that if the teachers/role models were truthful to their students/children about their thoughts or beliefs, they would receive more trust, understanding, and cooperation from those adolescent children. If those teachers/role models were not only honest but consistent with what they taught/preached, then the children could focus more on the academics they were learning and find more interest in the teachings. Educational Influences In the educational realm, Erikson was known for his eight stages of psychosocial development. His eight-stage approach focuses on different goals, concerns, and challenges for each stage in life. Erikson believed each stage was another learning curve and building block for what was next. Adolescence should be able to decide who they want to become without the pressure of teachers or parents wanting them to be someone else. His eight-stages consist of the following: Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust (Infancy from birth to 18 months) Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt (Toddler years from 18 months to three years) Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt (Preschool years from three to five) Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority (Middle school years from six to 11) Stage 5: Identity vs. Confusion (Teen years from 12 to 18) Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation (Young adult years from 18 to 40) Stage 7: Generativity vs. Stagnation (Middle age from 40 to 65) Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair (Older adulthood from 65 to death) Erik Erikson.
