Title: The psychology of morbid curiosity: Development and initial validation of the morbid curiosity scale APA citation: Scrivner, C. (2021). The psychology of morbid curiosity: Development and initial validation of the morbid curiosity scale. Personality and Individual Differences , 183 . https://doi.org/10.1016/j.paid.2021.111139 Introduction: Why does this topic matter? What are the constructs involved? What theories or models guide this paper? What gap does the article try to address? - This topic matters because research on morbid curiosity is rare in psychological literature. Addressing morbid curiosity can help researchers to better understand what it is about aspects of life that are perceived to be dangerous that spike interest in people. - The constructs involved include interest in crime and horror movies and novels, the links between personality traits and morbid curiosity, and the links between morbid curiosity and media preferences. - The theories and models that guide this paper include the 24-item morbid curiosity scale (MCS), the Five-Dimensional Curiosity Scale Revised, and the HEXACO personality scale. - The gap this article is trying to address is which personality and individual differences are most strongly correlated with morbid curiosity. Hypotheses: If people are morbidly curious, then individuals are more likely to learn about threat in the real world that could affect them. Methods & Results: Who are the participants? Why use this sample? How were the constructs operationalized? What did participants do? What was the design? - The participants in study 1 includes 385 adults ranging in ages 19 to 77. Study 2 includes 330 participants ranging in age between 18 and 96. Study 3 includes 322 participants between the ages of 18 and 66. Study 4 includes 144 participants, mostly university students. - This sample is used because the studies were done online. The only requirement for participation was people had to be at least 18 years old, since there are so many participants all ranging in age,
Which results support the main conclusions? What analyses were exploratory, which were planned? race, and gender, the sample had internal validity. - The constructs were operationalized by using questionnaires that were answered using a 6-point range. - The participants were asked to rate 29 proposed items of the MCS on a six-point scale in study one. In study two they were asked to complete to 24- item MCS and the Five-Dimensional Curiosity Scale Revised. They were also asked to complete the 24-item Morbid Curiosity Scale, and the Ten- item Personality Inventory in Study 3. In study 4 participants were asked to choose between photos. The design was rating a statement on a point scale, Study 1 used a 6-point scale and study 3 used a 7- point scale, 6/7 being they agreed, and 1 being they disagreed. - The results that support the main conclusions include conferment of convergent validity in study 2, Conferment of the factor structure of the 24-item MCS in study 1, and the links between media consumption and morbid curiosity in study 3. - The analyses that were exploratory are the relationship between psychopathy and morbid curiosity. The analyses that were planned are understanding what personality traits were most closely associated to morbid curiosity. Discussion: Were the hypotheses supported? Based on what evidence? What are the implications? What limitations do the authors include? - The hypothesis was supported based on the evidence, such as, the positive relationship between morbid curiosity and media preferences. Individuals that were found to be more morbidly curious were also found to learn more about threat through the media, such as true crime novels and horror movies. - The implications are people who are morbidly curious are more likely to choose media that focuses on true crime, horror, and psychological thrillers. This is mostly because of the sense of threat, such as bodily harm. - Limitations that the author includes are that threats can be somewhat subjective; in the future it would be beneficial to be more specific. Another limitation is that there are many other personality traits that may be related to morbid curiosity that were not tested in these studies.
Summarize: Write your own abstract (100-250 words) for the article The purpose of this study was to understand the psychological nature behind morbid curiosity and what personality traits are most closely related to morbid curiosity. Study 1 was primarily for constructing the new Morbid Curiosity Scale. Study 2 was used to assess the validity of this new scale and its relation to personality. Study 3 evaluated the extent to which the new MCS predicts morbidly curious preferences. Finally, study 4 was used to evaluate the extent to which the new MCS predicts morbidly curious behaviors. These studies concluded that there was a psychological nature behind morbid curiosity and that the MCS being used to assess individual differences in trait morbid curiosity was developed through this scale and validated through the studies results. Analysis: What do you think of how the constructs were operationalized? What are the strengths of the study? Are there limitations you think are important that the authors omitted? - The constructs were operationalized well. Using well developed scales and straight forward statements in the questionnaires gives more validity to the results. - The strength of this study includes the number of studies used to validate the new MCS. Using different studies to focus on specific results limits the number of variables that can affect the results in each study. Also using so many different samples, all with different participants adds more validity to the results. - A limitation that I think is important that the author omitted is the difference in media consumption based on morbid curiosity between men and women. Synthesis: How does this relate to your prior ideas? How does this relate to other literature you’ve read? Does this article make you think of other questions or topics you should read about? How does this relate to your own interests or research project? - This relates to my prior ideas because I had predicted that there is a connection between morbid curiosity and media consumptions. I also have always thought that there is a psychological reason behind morbid curiosity. - This relates to other literature I have read because I usually focus on psychological literature that focuses on criminals, victims, and mental disorders. This article focuses on why the public are drawn to these specific topics. - This article makes me think of other topics I should read about, such as, what types of threats to do people respond to the most. When it comes to true crime and morbid curiosity, what type of threats will

people read/watch the most. For example, would someone rather choose media focuses on the threat of interpersonal violence or the perceived threat of the paranormal, and why. - This relates to my research project because it has to do with morbid curiosity. My research project focuses on why people are drawn to tales of true crime and one of the biggest factors is morbid curiosity.
