Practitioner-Scholar Model Tasha N. Robinson School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Capella University PSY5002: Foundations of Theory and Practice for Master's Psychology Learners Renee Ford August 5, 2023 1
Abstract Anxiety and depression in our society are on the rise. The rising rate could be due to untreated mental health issues. Another reason could be a lack of empathy in the mental health field. My overall vision is to be able to help people in the mental health field. My passion and interest lie in this field because I believe mental health is very important for overall health. McClintock is credited for creating the practitioner-scholar model. Practitioner-scholars are committed to the well-being of clients and colleagues. I am striving to achieve excellence as a therapist and this model is used to achieve such a goal . The model can be used by academicians of different fields. The role of a practitioner-scholar in the field of psychology is an important role for a psychologist to have to be effective and respectful to clients. In this role, I will also gain multicultural competence that will be beneficial for the type of work I want to do. 2
Practitioner –Scholar McClintock is credited for creating the practitioner-scholar model. Practitioner-Scholars are committed to the well-being of clients and colleagues. They are open to learning new ways of being effective. They can “conceptualize their work about broader organizational, community, political, and cultural contexts” ( Distefano et al., 2004) McClintock’s scholar-practitioner model can help me meet my vision and goal to help people with mental health issues. The ultimate goal of the model is to learn new ways of problem-solving. A good practitioner-scholar takes the issue of diversity into account. A practitioner-scholar strives to create knowledge that is new in a field. I am striving to achieve excellence as a therapist and this model is used to achieve such a goal. As a therapist, I would ask myself a m I competent to treat these clients? As long as I have been trained well and utilize the model, I will be a confident and competent therapist. Utilizing the practitioner-scholar model will allow me to follow a template that is known to work in the field. I want to be able to give my best to my clients. I want to be able to overcome different biases that can hinder the work of a therapist. In my field of work currently, I often see a lack of sensitivity to clients’ cultures and beliefs. When you fail to have sensitivity to these issues, therapy will not be beneficial. Since a young age, I have always been sensitive to people's needs. I put others before myself, and consider myself a helper. I have always wanted to go into the field of psychology. I find it interesting and easy to study. When I started my school journey, the first classes I picked up were psychology classes. Those types of classes just resonated with me, and I knew it was something I wanted to explore further. 3

Role as a Multicultural Practitioner-Scholar The McClintock model shares the idea of professional excellence grounded in theory and research, informed by experiential knowledge, and motivated by personal values, political commitments, and ethical conduct. (McClintock, 2004) The McClintock model shares the idea of professional excellence grounded in theory and research, informed by experiential knowledge, and motivated by personal values, political commitments, and ethical conduct. (McClintock, 2004) The McClintock model shares the idea of professional excellence grounded in theory and research, informed by experiential knowledge, and motivated by personal values, political commitments, and ethical conduct (McClintock, 2004). The model can be used by academicians of different fields. The role of a practitioner-scholar in the field of psychology is an important role for a psychologist to have. It assists with keeping the psychologist informed. This is done through reading researcher, doing research, Theories, and experiments. The model can help guide you in developing the skills, knowledge, and multicultural competencies by giving a sort of template to follow. For example, if a client is facing an issue, as a practitioner-scholar, the clinician could take some time to sit down with the client and research the issue. New insight or knowledge could be gained on the issue at hand. The model focuses on “professional excellence grounded in theory and research, informed by experiential knowledge, and motivated by personal values, political commitments, and ethical conduct” (McClintock, 2004). The model can be used to troubleshoot issues at hand. Uplifting your clients is always the goal. You never want to dismiss or demean them in any way. Traditional psychology approaches and techniques are not effective when they seem to minimize or ignore the importance of such variables as age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability (Hanson et al., 2000). Clients come from all sorts of backgrounds, and being able to embrace a client and meet them where they are is a great talent to 4
have. Following this model can assist with developing the knowledge and skills necessary to have multicultural competency. Vision My vision for my future career would be working in a therapy setting, and engaging with my clients in private practice. I would like to work with individuals who deal with anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression seem to affect lots of people. I have always been a people watcher and people intrigued me very much. I would consider myself an introvert who observes my surroundings and the people around me. I would like to work in this field and I am aware that boundaries are needed to be successful. To protect the therapeutic relationship with my clients I will make boundaries between me and the clients. I would try my best to not be biased or oppressive in any manner. I will take into consideration where my clients are coming from, and try to meet them where they are at. I will make sure I am educated, and taking continual education courses on bias and oppression. It can be difficult at times to understand what a client needs, but it is important to try and understand them “ To provide optimal care for all patients, it is important to see differences from the patient's perspective and to work with patients from a range of demographics” ( Frisby & O'Donohue, 2018). You have to be willing to put in the work to understand others. You must have the Clinical skills necessary to work effectively and ethically with culturally diverse individuals, groups, and communities (Hansen, Pepitone-Arreola-Rockwell, & 5
Greene, 2000). You have to be able to navigate different people from different backgrounds. Multicultural competency in therapy can improve client outcomes and increase satisfaction with clients. I intend to work at a private practice that sees a diverse population of people. I will be working in a city population, so that will ensure a multicultural experience. Working with culturally diverse populations can cause some challenges to arise. Professional communication can be misinterpreted or difficult to understand across languages and cultures. Being a therapist can be a rewarding job. It can also be challenging, but with models to follow such as McClintock, you can be an effective therapist. Conclusion Becoming a multicultural practitioner-scholar is not something that is easily done. It does take practice and commitment to your clients. You have to be willing to meet them where they are and their needs. You have to take your time with people to understand them. To provide optimal care for all patients, it is important to see differences from the patient's perspective (Galanti, 2014). You cannot rush them in their journey. You must take the time to plant seeds and watch them grow. Therapy is not a rushed process, but rather a slow deliberate process. I believe that becoming a practitioner-scholar is obtainable. It is something anyone can do with enough work. McClintock is credited for creating the practitioner-scholar model. This model can be used as a template for navigating the need to learn more and explore the world around us. 6
