Week 8 Assignment: Case Study Analysis: Adulthood Tasha Robinson Capella University PSY6015: Lifespan Development Alisa Estey December, 2023
Case Study Luis is a 52-year-old Cuban-American male who has spent the last 24 years in the human resource field. He is currently a supervisor in the billing department of a midsized hospital in the southeastern part of the United States. He worked hard to obtain a master’s degree while on the job at the hospital and always had high aspirations for himself professionally. Luis has three children from his first marriage, which ended in divorce. His first wife Anna, who is 50, works as a preschool teacher in a school nearby. Their children’s ages are 16, 20, and 22. Both older children started to attend college but may have to drop out temporarily due to financial - difficulties. Luis feels that it is his responsibility to support his children’s education, and he has been paying as much of their tuition as he can afford. Luis and his second wife live in a modest home in a community close to Luis’s job and his church, where he is an active member. Luis’s second wife, Sandy, has two boys aged 12 and 14. The younger boy has a serious learning disability and needs extra tutoring and a great deal of parent support to keep up academically. Sandy works part time as a receptionist in a medical practice, allowing her the flexibility to be home when her children return from school. Luis and Sandy support each other and put their family first. Sandy’s widowed mother lives nearby and helps with the children on a regular basis. Recently, Luis has felt that his job is becoming more complicated and demanding. He has noted a dramatic increase in the amount of paperwork required and a distinct decrease in the time allotted to meet deadlines. His supervisory responsibilities have expanded to include workers from another unit, a change that has significantly increased his workload. His long-time assistant, who had taken over the management of many daily office tasks, was recently reassigned. Luis’s lower back pain, related to a traffic accident that happened when he was younger, has taken a
significant turn for the worse. He is feeling more “on edge” during the day and has resumed taking the painkillers his doctor prescribed. He worries about what would happen if he lost his job, especially with so many people depending upon him. Luis has been instrumental in introducing wellness programs for the hospital employees, and he’s even extended some programs to members of his church. However, he feels that these programs are not for him. His employees might not think he’s capable of being their supervisor if he admits to needing self- help. And, he’s always relied on his faith to get him through hard times.

Introduction Luis is a 52-year-old Cuban-American man. Luis works in human resources and has done this work for the past 24 years. He currently serves as a supervisor in the billing department of a midsized hospital in the southeastern part of the United States. Luis obtained his Master's degree while working at his current job. His first marriage ended in divorce and he has 3 children from the marriage. Luis's first wife's name is Anna and their children are 16, 20, and 22. The 20 and 22-year-olds are in college but are experiencing financial difficulties. Luis feels as though it is his responsibility to pay for college for his children. Luis is currently married and he and his wife live in a modest home close to Luis's job and church. Luis's current wife is Sandy. Sandy has two boys who are 12 and 14. The 12-year-old has a learning disability and struggles academically. Sandy is a part-time receptionist in a medical practice. This allows her to be home for the children when needed. Sandys's mother lives nearby and helps with the children. Luis has started to feel as though his job is becoming more complicated and demanding. He reports a dramatic increase in the amount of paperwork required for him to do. His long-time assistant has been reassigned. Luis reports lower back pain due to a traffic accident when he was younger. He has started taking the painkillers his doctor prescribed to him. Luis relies on his faith to get him through hard times. He does not feel that he needs to enter a program due to his employees possibly not thinking he’s capable of being their supervisor. This paper will include an analysis of lifespan theories along with a discussion of the case study. It will analyze Luis and his behavior in Piaget's formal operational stage of life that he is currently in. Luis's children and stepchildren are having struggles in school. Luis is having issues with his back and is using painkillers to cope with the pain. Luis feels as though he does not need
a program to help him get back on track due to the judgment of his employees. Luis is religious and relies on his faith to help him get through hard times. Case Study Analysis The presenting challenge is Luis’s back pain and painkiller use. Luis was in an accident when he was younger. This accident has had lasting effects. He struggles with back pain that affects all aspects of his life. Luis’s wife Sandy does work but he is the primary breadwinner. Luis helps his two oldest children who are not with Sandy. Luis has a lot of responsibilities to take care of with an ailing back. If Luis does not do something about his back pain, he will suffer more dire consequences. Luis has let his back pain linger on for a while. This can exacerbate the pain and cause more damage that will need to be fixed. Another challenge is the children's schooling. The younger child struggles due to a learning disability and the older two struggle financially and may have to drop out of college due to this fact. Luis pays for the college of his two oldest children. He feels as though he is responsible for this payment. They are on the verge of having to drop out due to the issues with the payment. Luis feels it is his responsibility to take care of the bill. Application of Lifespan Development Theory Piaget's theory of cognitive development indicates that there are 4 stages to cognitive development. They are; the Sensorimotor stage (0–2 years old), the Preoperational stage (2–7 years old), the Concrete operational stage (7–11 years old), and the Formal operational stage (11 years old through adulthood) (Broderick & Blewit, 2019) . Luis is currently in the Formal operational stage 11 years through adulthood. Kohlberg's theory states that moral logic is focused on seeking and maintaining justice (Broderick & Blewit, 2019) . Luis is in Kohlberg's 4 th stage Member-of-Society Perspective. he is more concerned with the order of society and the
behaviors of others. The role of moral reasoning skills is supported by both Piaget and Kohlberg (Broderick & Blewitt, 2019) . Luis is having a hard time in life at this time. He does want to have his health back and be able to keep up with his workload. He wants to take care of his family and pay for the things that they need. Luis would benefit from talking with someone about his issues. He would do good to talk with a therapist so that he can start to work on the issues that he has. Physical therapy may also help with his back issues. Luis needs to see a Doctor and figure out what is actually wrong with his back and how it can be fixed permanently. Cultural and Personal Challenges to Development Cultural Luis is Cuban-American and very religious. Luis relies on his faith to get him through hard times. Unfortunately, his faith alone will not help his back situation or the financial situation with his children and their school bills. The need for culture increases with age (Bales et al., 1999). Culturally, Cuban men are responsible for taking care of their entire families. Men do tend to be the main earners in Cuban society, a reflection in part of the lack of jobs in the country and the fact that many jobs can be highly corporeal, such as in farming, and construction. They work hard and are known for being the breadwinners. They are also very family-oriented, and they take great pride in their heritage. Luis is getting older and his back problems will only continue to get worse, they will not get better without an intervention of some type. Intervention Using Lifespan Developmental Theories Luis is struggling with his work and family life. He would do well to seek professional help from a therapist to be able to sort out the issues at hand. Luis should sit down with a professional and his family and discuss all the issues at hand. Luis would have to be open and honest about his painkiller usage and his back issues. Paget’s formal operative stage is age 11-

adulthood. During this stage, Luis is learning to find himself (Broderick & Blewit, 2019) . He is in the middle of midlife and can potentially be on the verge of a midlife crisis. Luis could be having a crisis and not understanding what is happening in his life at this time. Luis is learning that people are individuals with their thoughts and beliefs that differ from his. His kids have their thoughts and beliefs about him and their lives. Kohlberg’s 6 stages of theory indicate that Luis is in the 4 th stage of development. The stages mainly focus on seeking and maintaining justice (Broderick & Blewit, 2019) . Luis is in the stage of life where he is focusing on social order and it being maintained. Luis may feel it is unfair where he is in life. He may feel as though why me and why are these things happening to me. Luis is struggling in this time in his life. Things could be worse for him, he is able to maintain employment at this time and is able to take care of his family. If his painkiller usage continues, he is at risk of losing it all. Conclusion Luis is a 52-year-old man who has a family and extended family. Luis has children with his current wife and ex-wife. Luis works but also uses painkillers regularly to maintain himself and to be able to continue working. His work is starting to pile up and he is starting to feel at risk of losing everything. Luis feels as though his life is spiraling and he is struggling at this time. Luis is a family man and takes care of his kids and wife. He is family-oriented and loves his family. He is at risk of losing everything if he does not seek professional help at this time with his family. Luis needs to come clean about his usage and pain to his wife and family. Cuban Americans are very family-oriented and keeping this secret from his family has to be hard on Luis and his emotional well-being.
