Running head: RESEARCH PROPOSAL 1 Research Proposal University of Akron Tonya R. Williams Professor Laura Stenik May 8, 2018
RESEARCH PROPOSAL 2 Proposal/Problem/Purpose I will study persons with addiction and how successful the use of Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is as an intervention. This will be studied because of the epidemic in our country and the need for interventions to increase chances of higher recovery rates. I will gather information by visiting treatment facilities and surveying 100 women. Research Question and Hypothesis If persons with addiction receive MI or CBT intervention the greater the success rate of recovery will be. I picked this topic to help social workers find the best solution to help persons with addiction. The benefit to this research will be to assist with information to obtain higher success rate in recovery. Literature Review Cognitive Behavioral Therapy- the links between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are explored through CBT. Reflected in clinical guidelines this strong evidenced base recommends CBT as a treatment for many common mental health disorders as well as addictions. CBT alleviate distress by assisting to develop adaptive cognitions and behaviors this is the aim of CBT according to Fenn, Byrne (2013). Motivational Interviewing- used for strengthening one’s own motivation and commitment for change. It is collaborative, guiding conversational style. MI is a successful intervention approach that has been proven for facilitating positive behavioral change according to Naar, Safren (2017). According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse in an outline, review
RESEARCH PROPOSAL 3 best practices for substance abuse treatment include MI, CBT approaches, and 12 Step Affiliation NIDA (2014a). According to Sudhir (2018) using mindfulness practices such as MI or CBT focuses on improving building awareness, distress tolerance skills, addictive behaviors, and preventing relapse. Research of treatment outcome showed MI and CBT both are effective as short term treatment in substance use disorders. The intervention CBT addresses co-occurring mental health and conduct issues that are associated with substance abuse. According to NIDA (2018) CBT was developed as a method when treating problem drinking, to prevent relapse. It has since been adapted to use for persons with cocaine addiction. Persons, who choose to use substances in the early teenage years, are more likely to develop substance use disorder. The chances of this are increased exponentially with early use Gilley (2016). This is where CBT or MI should be used at an early stage as an intervention no matter the age of the person. Also in Insights on CBT (2018) according to Freud he believed that buried deep within their unconscious-minds the majority of his patients had suffered early experiences. According to therapy options (2018) overcoming addiction is about more than just treating what brought you here. CBT is great intervention for people with co-occurring mental health disorders, when used in addition to medication it works really well. The statistics in this article show that 85 percent were improved when using CBT and medication, whereas only 55 percent improved when using medication only, and 52 percent who were only exposed to CBT. In another article it was found that 12 step attendance in conjunction with CBT or MI increases recovery and extends abstinence for longer periods of time Kelly (2017). According to CBT and (2018) the intervention CBT and MI can also assist with depression and many other disorders.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL 4 Variables Variable Ind/Dep Operationalized Level of Measurement Motivational Interviewing Independent Have you completed MI Nominal Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Independent Have you completed CBT Nominal Success Rate of Sobriety Dependent How long have you been sober Ratio Data Collection The data will be collected by going to Rosary Heaven, and the Lighthouse recovery center. The study will be done by surveying the participants after completing the intervention. Sampling There will be a three question survey that will only be given to the participants that completed one of the interventions MI or CBT. Threats to Internal Validity Testing-participants can learn from or be otherwise influenced by the process of completing a questionnaire or other measurement procedures. Regression- We might do this to be certain that our participants are those currently most in need of intervention and/or that they truly possess certain characteristics the researcher wants to try to affect; Which means they may score
RESEARCH PROPOSAL 5 high or low in pretest but the posttest measurement is likely to be less extreme. Maturation- If the MI or CBT is utilized over time it may improve recovery outcome, so if only limited use then this could be a threat to validity, need time to see results. Research Design This is a pre-experimental design it is considered a snapshot in time, and then a conclusion is drawn about an observation. A single group of participants is studied at one point in time after an intervention or another type of stimulus. No control group or comparison is employed. . Obstacles Could be whether or not the information is correct, as well as if the participants may not be honest, being able to convince the participants that the intervention MI or CBT when used may help to increase the chances of recovery. In addition if the client leaves treatment early or if the agency doesn’t cooperate and allow the clients to be surveyed.
