APPLICATION OF ATTACHMENT THEORY TO A CASE STUDY -Ella Schultz- Attachment Theory Attachment is the first emotional bond that forms between babies and their caregivers/parents. Attachment theory explains the behaviors that illustrate attachment in children and adults. Attachment Theory Perspective From an attachment theory perspective, the problems presented for Ella Schultz are her maladaptive behaviors of refusing to go home and illegal activities that led to her arrests. Attachment theory defines these behaviors as being caused by her disorganized attachment style with her parents. Due to the inconsistency and abuse she experienced at home, Ella’s ability to express her emotions, cope with stress, and relate to others and the world around her are affected. Assessment Questions 1. Beginning from when you can first remember, can you describe your relationship with your mom and your dad? 2. When you were distressed as a young child, what did you do? Interventions 1. Emotion Map – Mental & Physical i. Working on Ella’s self-compassion and acceptance, I would have her explore a time when she felt angry or sad with one, or both, of her parents. 2. Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (Hughes, 2017). i. Individual and joint sessions. ii. Facilitate: iii. Co-regulation iv. Therapeutic attitude of PACE (playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, empathy) v. Integrative conversations Self-Reflective Question How stressed might Ella feel to be working with me, a social worker?
