Module 1 Assignment Introduction to Personality and Research Methods Approximate Completion Time: 60 minutes Value: 3% Assignment Instructions 1. Please review the module lecture materials and corresponding textbook chapter(s). 2. Please read the information in the syllabus about the assignments. It describes how to complete and submit your assignment and how it will be graded. 3. When you are ready, please answer the questions below in the space provided. 4. When you are finished, please submit your assignment as a Word or PDF file. Section 1.1: Take a Look at the Word How would you describe your personality (i.e., your stable/predictable and unique Characteristics? Do you think others perceive your personality accurately? I consider myself to be a stable, organised, and logical individual. I often choose logic and reason above feeling and fantasy. I am also easily moved by emotions. While some people might find me to be distant or scary, others could find my common sense and pragmatism appealing. Section 1.2: Personality and the Social Media Do you use social media? How realistic do you and/or others appear on social media? Do you think social media influences the way people present themselves? I am a casual user of social media. I think my appearance on social media is not very realistic as it is a very well curated and thought-out image so that I seem a certain way on these platforms. This is also common for other people. We only put out what we want other people to see on social media. Social media is a substantial influence on how people present themselves because many aspire to be or are at least inspired by what they view on social media. Section 1.3: The Role of Race and Gender in Shaping Personality In which ways to you believe your race and gender have shaped the development of your personality and the personalities of those you know most? As a black woman in Canada, I believe my race and gender have shaped the development of my personality. Experiences have affected how I view myself. Societal pressure has often led to me feeling stressed or anxious. There is a constant self-applied pressure to succeed as if to prove my worth. A lot of people I know also carry this burden of having to defend themselves from stereotypes and in doing so adopt a personality. Please be succinct and stay within TWO pages for the completed assignment. Please reduce the font size of your replies if you have more to add than what the space allows. Thank you!
Section 1.4: The Role of Culture in Shaping Personality In which ways do you believe your cultural beliefs about destiny, individualism, parenting, and self-enhancement have shaped your personality development? I strongly believe in a unique destiny, collectivism, the parent's authority over their child, and the importance of self-enhancement. I believe this has helped mold my personality in some regards. For example, I have a certain calmness when thinking about my future because I believe in a unique destiny for myself. I have also developed a relationship with my parents based on boundaries of where their authority ends, and my autonomy begins. In addition, I am always looking for ways to improve myself and move upwards in life. Section 1.5 – Part 4: Assessing Your Personality – Assessment Techniques Which of the approaches A through F below do you believe is the most accurate approach and the least accurate approach to assessing personality? Explain your choices. A. Self-report Personality Tests B. Online Test Administration C. Projective Techniques D. Clinical Interviews E. Behavioral Assessment F. Thought and Experience Assessment Behavioral Assessment is the most accurate approach as it involves observing an individual's behavior in various situations to gather information about their personality and behavior. It can be used to assess behavior that would ordinarily be difficult if using other methods such as self- report personality tests. Online Test Administration is the least accurate as the quality and validity of online tests may vary, and it may be difficult to ensure that the person taking the test is who they say they are. Section 1.8: Questions about Human Nature: What Are We Like? For each question A through F below, explain your choice in the space below. A. Are we in charge of our lives: free will or determinism? I believe in in a combination of free will and determinism, where our choices are influenced by both internal and external factors. B. What dominates us: nature or nurturing environment? Is human nature unique or universal? While humans possess unique characteristics and traits, there may also be certain fundamental qualities that are common to all humans, regardless of culture or historical period. E. Our life goals: do we seek satisfaction or growth? Whether we prioritize satisfaction or growth in our lives depends on our unique values, priorities, and life circumstances.
