APA Citation : Koichu, B., & Leron, U. (2015). Proving as problem solving: The role of cognitive decoupling. The Journal of Mathematical Behavior , 40 (Part B), 233–244. https://doi.org/ 10.1016/j.jmathb.2015.10.005 Date: 2/6/2021 Theory/hypothesis: This was a re-analysis of a previous study, Koichu’s (2004) Ph.D. study. The reason for the re-analysis was to further explain some of the roles of general cognitive mechanisms which are a part of the proving process. The authors of this article ran a case study involving mathematics, they used data from a previous study to reanalyze it. One of the goals of the study were to identify patterns of heuristic behaviors of students. Methods: The quadrilateral midline problem was the focus of this study. Participants were asked to solve the quadrilateral midline problem. The students who participated were analyzed based on how they went about solving the problem. The participants were asked to think out loud while they solved the problems. The authors of this article reread the results of the previous study to use the data for a different analysis. Research Findings: The authors of this article introduce a theory they have about the Cognitive Decoupling Framework, they used previous data from past studies to show how this theory would work in a real life scenario. Future Directions: For future research, it may be beneficial to run a study from start using the the Cognitive Decoupling Framework from the beginning and hypothesis how it will affect participants if it is used on them.
