Report
What was the most challenging part of this week’s material for you? The most challenging part of this week’s material was learning that adolescents’ brains are not wired to plan ahead or to be future orientated according to the report “Less Capable Brain, Less Culpable Teen?” from Mercyhurst College Civic Institute. I do find this contradicting. I have met high school students who were engaged and academically inclined throughout their four years of high school to get into their university they wanted to go. I do believe that there are adolescence who are focused, mature and goal orientated. I do think that it is easy to stereotype adolescences due to possibly knowing a teen who is or who has made impulse decisions. I do think that it is important to not immediately place all adolescences into one category as all adolescences mature at different rates. What was the most interesting part of this week’s material for you? The most interesting part of this week’s material was learning about the adolescent brain development in the report “Less Capable Brain, Less Culpable Teen?” from Mercyhurst College Civic Institute. When I was in high school, I observed that there were always groups of people hanging out together. During lunch, you would see the following groups together: athletics, AP students, and what I would call “the gangsters”. Though I would “mingle” around with all groups because when I started high school I was in general education classes and not in AP classes, which meant that I hung out a lot with the “gangsters” until I transitioned over to AP classes. While engaging with all groups in high school, I noticed that all groups went through their own experience of being under “peer pressure” and being heavily influenced by their peers. Due to the peer pressure, incredible athletics were kicked off their seasonal sport or the ‘gangster” in high school now had a probation officer visiting them weekly. Where I am going with this is that just because the AP students seem to be the most smartest students in high school does not mean that they do not fall into peer pressure themselves. I once saw an AP student get peer pressured to ask one of “the gangsters” to homecoming, due to his friends saying that he was a chicken and not capable of doing such thing. I do believe that even though some teens may not “look” a certain way or capable of doing “bad” behaviors, all adolescence do experience peer pressure some time during their high school years. I was not surprised but found it interesting to learn that the “pre-frontal cortex” was the last part of the brain to develop. The pre-frontal cortex allows individuals to be “able to reason, control impulses, makes judgments and regulate mood and behavior” (Less Capable Brain, Less Culpable Teen?). This report allowed me to self-reflect in my high school years, and it made
me realized that I have gone a long way to become the person I am. I have made impulse decisions in high school without ever thinking of the consequences but to satisfy my friends, I did something they peer pressured me to do which resulted in me being suspended from school for 2 days. In what ways can you make this week’s material actionable in your social work practice? I currently work as a case manager with unaccompanied immigrant children and I work with males and females between the ages of 13-18. This week’s readings targeted the development of adolescence and I understand that adolescence do encounter peer pressure. One thing I do want to do is work with mental health clinicians on establishing a plan of action for the adolescences at the shelter who encounter peer pressure and bullying amongst each other. A plan of action may include, the youth immediately seeking an employee and advocating for themselves when they encounter peer pressure. Some youth peer pressure each other to think of ways to escape the shelter and as a result, they do try to escape the shelter and the youth do not think of the consequences of their actions. I also want to help create group sessions where the youth are able to explore their feelings about bullying and how they feel about peer pressure. What is one question you have for your peers about this week’s material? Have you encountered adolescences who are mature beyond their age? What are your thoughts on adolescence who are mature beyond their age?
