Unit 8 Discussion 1 The question I chose to address concerned freshmen who decided he was unsure if he wanted to remain a psychology major. This is a decision I have seen many students struggle with over the years of being a professor. Some are certain of their chosen profession for the future, others remain unsure. There are even some students who return for a career change later in life. Therefore, it is important for these learners to have mentor who can guide them for life. There are a variety of ways to be an effective mentor. A person does not necessarily have to be a counselor, teacher, or a member of a school to be a mentor. The mentor could be a friend, a family member, or even someone who has experienced the same circumstance as the mentee (Koutsoukos, 2022). Yet, the result is the same, which results in the individual receiving guidance and confidence to move forward in life. As a faculty member, it is important that all professors, teachers, or instructors alike have a background in education and have a variety of skills to address the needs of the students. The best qualities for an instructor to have are great communication skills, positive attitude about learning, and being approachable to form a professional relationship with the learners. Concerning the freshman who is unsure of their chosen course of study, the best option would be to speak to the student about possibly shadowing an individual in the profession, address the reasoning behind the doubts, and if the learner is positive about changing their degree, explore other options and interests. As a professor, it would be my job to ensure that the student has all options explored and not influence any decision as the learner makes a choice (Koutsuokos, 2022). References Koutsoukos, M. (2022). On becoming an effective mentor in adult Education—Investigating the perceptions of greek adult educators. While I am overall pleased with my results, I do know that I could potentially do better in some of the areas. However, I think my biggest challenge is that I am part of the deaf and hard of hearing community, and not everyone at my college knows ASL or has the experience or patience to deal with an individual who cannot hear and has to continually read lips to communicate with those who can hear. For my students, I think the reason I scored high with trust and alternatives is because my disabled student shave to trust me to ensure their education is the best possible and I always seek out various methods and assessments for them to use for their personal learning. Every student has a different way of processing information, applying the material, and retaining the knowledge for a course. Wlodkowshi (2017) speaks of a multitude of strategies that students can use in the classroom to reflect what was learned previously to demonstrate the knowledge. For example, if I was running a laboratory exercise, I could ask a student to demonstrate their knowledge of the microscope by identifying the various parts, and how to use the microscope to view the slides. Sometimes, I may present a few options of assessments for the students to chose from and then present their learned material. This way, I can ensure what was presented in the lecture or the lab is retained and applied throughout the course. References Cohen, N. H. (2003).
