CLASSICAL CONDITIONING BY IVAN PAVLOV
WHO IS IVAN PAVLOV ? He is a Russian psychologist who believed in behaviorism( a belief that psychology can be studied objectively through observable actions without any reference to internal mental processes) He is well known for his discovery of classical conditioning. He stumbled upon this idea by accident when he was studying the digestion of dogs. This discovery was a major foundation for the idea of behaviorism. VOCABS ! CLASSICAL CONDITIONING: Two stimuli are linked together to produce a new learned response in a person or animal. Unconditioned Stimulus a stimulus that produces an unconditioned response(unlearned response), as in withdrawal from a hot radiator, contraction of the pupil on exposure to light, or salivation when food is in the mouth.
CONDITIONED STIMULUS a neutral stimulus that is repeatedly associated (see pairing) with an unconditioned stimulus until it has the ability to produce a response that it previously did not. CONDITIONED RESPONSE a learned response to a previously neutral stimulus ( a stimulus that produces no response). In Pavlov's experiment, the salivation of the dog, which is the unconditioned response, is also the conditioned response. UNCONDITIONED RESPONSE An unconditioned response is an automatic response to a stimulus. The dogs salivating for food is the unconditioned response in Pavlov's experiment.

PAVLOV's EXPERIMENT A bell (NS) is rung right before the arrival of the food. When the food (UNS)arrives the dog begins to salivate(UNR). If the bell is rung immediately before presenting the food, the dog will begin to salivate(CR) at the sound of the bell. This is because the bell signals the arrival of the food. The bell has now become a conditioned stimulus. higher-order conditioning A conditioned stimulus can again be conditioned! The conditioned stimulus is paired with a new neutral stimulus to produce a response. This newly conditioned stimulus is weaker than the initial one. HOW CAN CLASSICAL CONDITIONING BE BENEFICIAL? In Today's World, people tend to have a lot of anxiety and stress. Classical conditioning are included in therapies such as exposure therapies to get rid of unnecessary anxiety and stress. acquisition
EXPOSURE THERAPY In this form of therapy, psychologists create a safe environment in which to “expose” individuals to the things they fear and avoid. The exposure to the feared objects, activities or situations in a safe environment helps reduce fear and decrease avoidance. Fear can be conditioned by pairing one neutral stimulus with an aversive stimulus(a stimulus that elicits a withdrawal response). After the acquisition, the neutral stimulus alone elicits a fear response. In this therapy, the neutral stimulus is presented alone repeatedly to extinguish the fear response. AVERSION THERAPY This type of therapy is used to treat addictive behaviors such as alcohol addiction. To avoid undesired behavior, unpleasant feelings are associated with the unwanted behavior. Due to the unpleasant stimulus, a person would develop an aversion towards the unwanted behavior. For example: To get rid of nail-biting (an unwanted behavior), foul-tasting nail polish is applied (an unpleasant stimulus). If this association happens repeatedly then the person is likely not to repeat the behavior
