1 Question Formats, Examples and Use in Psychology Student’s Name: Institutional Affiliation: Instructor’s Name: Course Code: Due Date:
2 Question formats in assessments serve distinct and specific purposes, and their choice depends on the learning objectives and the type of information instructer and psychologists aim to gather. Here's an exploration of the purposes and implications of different question formats in the context of education and psychology: 1. Short Answer and Completion: Purpose: These formats require students to provide complete sentences or concise responses. They assess factual knowledge and the ability to remember information accurately. Example: What is the capital of France? Relevance to Psychology: Useful for testing memory and factual knowledge, which is a very important in many psychological concepts. 2. Essay: Purpose: Essays allow students to demonstrate a profound understanding of a topic, critical thinking, and the ability to articulate complex psychology ideas. Example: Discuss the impact of childhood trauma on adult mental health. Relevance to Psychology: Fundamental in for assessing higher-order thinking, analysis, and synthesis of psychological theories and concepts. 3. Multiple Choice: Purpose: Multiple-choice questions provide a range of options, evaluating recognition, recall, and problem-solving abilities. Example: What is the primary neurotransmitter associated with happiness feeling? Relevance to Psychology: Useful for testing understanding of specific content and identifying misconceptions.
3 4. Matching: Purpose: Matching questions assess the ability to make relationship between related items or concepts. Example: Match the psychological theories with their proponents. Relevance to Psychology: Effective for assessing knowledge of key figures, theories, and their applications in psychology. 5. True/False: Purpose: True/false questions assess the ability to discern the accuracy of statements or concepts. Example: Sigmund Freud is considered the father of behaviorism. (False) Relevance to Psychology: Evaluates the ability to differentiate between factual accuracy and falsehood in psychological concepts. The question format with the most limitations is considered to be Multiple Choice. It can encourage shallow education, as students might guess correct answers without profound understanding. Crafting high-quality multiple-choice questions that truly assess comprehension can be challenging. I think Essay questions the most intuitive and effective for assessing my understanding. They allow me to showcase a comprehensive understanding of a topic, which is particularly relevant in the field of psychology, where complex concepts often require detailed explanations and critical analysis. A well-designed assessment should ideally incorporate a combination of these formats to comprehensively evaluate different aspects of learning and cognition (Tyack, A., & Mekler, E. D, 2020)
