Positive Psychology Due: October 28,2019 Dr.Lamount Midterm Short Answers 1.Positive institutions are designed to help individuals cope with different situations. These institutions are designed to make the individual have a sense of positivity in their life. They help the individual learned helplessness, they are taught to help themselves before anyone can help them. Positive institutions help develop and enrich human potential. It also helps create healthy families, if your home is unhealthy your life will be for dysfunctional. Positive institutions are responsible to help individual who need a little push, by showing them they have control over their lives. Also they help depressed people get out the house, be around people who have happy emotions and happiness is usually contagious. Their responsibility to society is to make sure the individuals are in a state of mind that is not dangerous to others. They have a responsibility to make sure these individuals are sane to be in public, also to help society understand the dyer need to help individuals with mental illness. 2.The character traits are wisdom, courage, justice, temperance, transcendence. All these traits are taught by our parents to a certain point. It makes us look into the future with a sense of hope for humanity. It helps us be better human beings in society because are our parents mostly taught us to be courageous when needs be, to listen to wisdom so when asked we have wisdom to give. To have justice to people who have wronged us and feel as though justice should be served. To have temperance towards unnecessary objects in life where we do not need to ruin our
future. To have transcendence to be creative in a way we see our lives and how we want it. These traits are critical to give a sense of hope because many people do not know how to look for positivity when they are down. Essay 1.Sometimes parents have no choice but to take a day off of work, when it is an emergency. Sometimes they cannot and have to leave their children with babysitters, sometimes they have to bring them to work with them because they cannot afford a day off. Even though Jackie was reluctant on believing her son she stayed. On a family perspective she did the right thing by staying a trusting her intuition that her son was very sick. Even though Robert’s father was saying he was exaggerating, Jackie knew her son better than anyone and knew he was not. In family dynamic it is hard to find child care for poor families or families in need because they are really expensive. In society people who use vouchers from family care are look down upon because they are “using” the system. Society perceptive of a mother going to work while their child is sick is neglect but if you stay home with your child you lose money to bring home for that child. Mother’s feel helpless as to what is right or wrong to o when their child is sick but also they learn to overcome it because if she does not care for her own family who will. Mother’s in society learned helplessness because they learn that in society they have to be helpless to ask for help. Mothers in society also need a positive institution where they feel safe and have no judgment towards them. 2.Robert’s mother Jackie could not protect him from selling drugs because of his environment and the events that happened in their life that year. Jackie tried to prioritize Robert’s
education by trying to find every job imaginable once she lost hers. Even though Robert was giving her his money, Jackie tried to send him to Mt.Camel. As time went on Jackie knew she was losing Robert to selling drugs, but also he was making his own choices now as to what he wanted to do with his life. Little did she know she taught him nuture the intelligent he has, she taught him to make choices that will help himself, also character traits as too what his future can be. Her efforts also keeping him away from drugs were drastic, every chance she had she made sure to teach him he was the best, he can be better that what society has taught him, he doesn’t have to become his environment. Society taught Robert that he had to become a product of his environment. He can not amount to nothing because he was not rich he came from “the hood” in his school. Society failed him because the streets knew who he was, and how smart he was but because they judge children from young age on who their family is or where they come from when they see their mother struggling that’s when they hook them. Society taught Robert that he is helpless , he will never amount to nothing so trusting the street was the only way where he knew he can helphis mother. Robert saw the consistency of money coming in and did not want to give it up. Society failed because a smart, educated man had to become a drug dealer.
