W03 TOA: Physical Development Presentation Study Group Name and Number Team 3 Team Leader Adelay Oliva Team Members in Attendance Parker Morgan, Shanelle Williams, Ryanne Abbott, Adelay Oliva Team Members Absent Alexis Haughawout, Mckayla Sherratt Zoom Link Uploaded the meeting to the assignment… Directions : Answer the questions below as a group. Make sure to justify your responses. 1. Design a physical activity that would be appropriate for a child in the age range of two to five years old. First, identify the age, and then describe the activity. Then, write a short paragraph that describes the activity and tells why it is appropriate for this age group. The age of child that we chose to design a physical activity for is four years old. The activity that we chose was learning different types of dances that go along with everybody’s favorite childhood songs. Things like the hokey pokey, head shoulders knees and toes, once I was snowman, popcorn popping, sunbeam song, and do as I’m doing. We believe this is appropriate based off the textbook that discusses children in early childhood being especially attracted to motion and song. From activities like this, children continue to develop and improve their fine motor skills. 2. How you could involve elementary-aged children in organized sports and still give them the autonomy to play and explore? Describe your conclusions in a short paragraph. Teach them how to play specific sports but disregard complicated rules that stop play of game and are overly complicated for them to understand. As parents of kids, they should focus on letting them play and have fun rather than the winning aspect. Another way to give them autonomy is allowing them to choose their position and what they really would like to play. The basis is that you should break the game down to the fundamentals and allow them to have fun! 3. Draw a sketch illustrating the following: The body shapes of boys and girls in early childhood. The body shapes of boys and girls in middle childhood. The body shapes of boys and girls in early adolescence. The body shapes of boys and girls in late adolescence or early adulthood.
4. Assume you are teaching in a preschool setting and a parent comes to you and expresses concern that her child is not eating enough, and she is concerned the student may not be eating the right foods. Write a short paragraph of what advice you could give the parent on early childhood nutrition, and how to avoid mealtime struggles. Approximately 100 words. The first thing that the teacher should address with the parent is that a reduction in appetite between the ages of 2 and 6 is normal! They should not be entirely put off or surprised by this. Then we would share with the parent a list of healthy patterns. They should know that they shouldn’t force their child to eat food and should most definitely keep mealtime a pleasant experience. In addition, they should recognize that appetite varies for everyone, even toddlers! We would also instruct them on the fact that they shouldn’t prepare separate meals for each child and that choices should be somewhat limited as well as balanced. The last piece of advice we would give is that bribery can be a very negative way to handle children not eating properly and could reinforce that behavior. 5. How can you as a teacher in a content area help adolescents learn to manage their environment to preserve their nutritional health and emotional growth toward adulthood? We believe it is important for teachers to establish that there are many different kinds of healthy body types. It’s also important to realize that not everyone receives this information in their home so maybe it would be a good idea to bring a professional in to talk about this! We would say it is important to advocate for students discussing these things with their parents and finding better ways to work together for these goals.
6. What adults can do as parents and pre-school teachers to encourage brain development during early childhood? It’s important for adults as parents to have their kids participate in activities that rely on fine motor skills so that these can be honed and refined. This might include things like dancing, drawing, pouring water, using scissors, and throwing or catching balls. These are simple fun activities that don’t require maturation but instead just focus on the development of these skills 7. During the beginnings of research into early childhood brain development, many parents decided they needed to foster brain development by giving their children as many experiences as they could. They would enroll young children in all kinds of classes, in everything from swimming to early reading and drama. The result was these children didn't develop any faster than other children who were less scheduled but allowed to experience a culturally rich environment. What then would be a wiser course of action for parents and pre-school teachers? Allow the kid to participate by having them exercise their own autonomy. Kids are way more intelligent than we sometimes realize, and we think it would be helpful for kids to be included in the decision process for what activities they are going to participate in. We also discussed how it might be beneficial to limit the number of activities on the schedule so that they do not experience burn out. What are the implications of this stage of brain development for middle and high-school teachers? Make sure you consider the value of a healthy sense of humor on the teacher’s part. (Slide 31) When hearing and listening to this video in our content study, we learned that it is often implied and is accurate that children at this age are more impulsive and take risks. Their amygdala is developing faster than their frontal cortex which leads to them making rash and impulsive decisions. It is important to teach them idea of taking calculated risks and being smart with the risks they do take. They also experience high levels of dopamine which allows them to feel a greater sense of reward from the learning and knowledge they are receiving. It’s important to be very direct in the consequences that attend certain actions. However, when children feel as though they are being lectured, they are less likely to listen, so teachers might want to apply empathy, humor, understanding, and life lessons of their own in these circumstances. If the student does make mistakes, it’s important to teach them that they are still loved and we can recover.
