Needs Assessment Worksheet Name of Student: Brittany Hill Names of Group Members: N/A Read the following case study, review the data set, and answer the subsequent questions: Case Study : Laurie is a professional counselor who works for a community mental health center in a rural area. In consultation with her colleagues, Laurie has identified 14 adolescents who currently participate in outpatient individual services who could potentially benefit from services specific to sexual abuse. Laurie would like to develop a psychotherapy counseling group to meet the needs of teens who have been sexually assaulted as an alternative or enhancement to individual therapy. In an effort to establish services that will best meet the needs of the clients, Laurie has conducted a Needs Assessment. She will present her findings to the mental health center administrators as evidence to support her group counseling proposal. Analyze the following data and determine whether enough evidence exists to support the development of the psychotherapy counseling group. Survey After securing parental permission, adolescents were asked to answer the following questions. Results for each question are included. 1. Age 2. Gender 3. Interest in group counseling 4. Topics of interest for a psychotherapy counseling group Participant # Age of Child Gender Interest in Group Counseling 1 15 F Yes 2 10 M Yes 3 13 F Yes 4 12 F Yes 5 10 F Yes 6 14 F Yes 7 17 M No 8 16 M No 9 12 M Yes

(Remember to consider the initial reason Laurie is considering a psychotherapy counseling group.) Laurie would like to develop a group for teens that have been sexually assaulted. The purpose of the needs assessment was to determine the needs of the clients in that population to be able to
establish the most effective group. What is the population of interest and who are the stakeholders for this Needs Assessment? (Think about everyone that is involved in this situation.) The population of interest is teens who have been sexually assaulted. The stakeholders for this Needs Assessment are Laurie and the mental health center administrators that Laurie will present her findings to. Compute the mean age of all proposed participants in the psychotherapy group. The mean age of all proposed participants in the psychotherapy group is 12.9 years old. What percentage of adolescents expressed interest in the proposed psychotherapy group? The percentage of adolescents that expressed interest in the proposed psychotherapy group was 57.14%. Based on the data provided, how did teens rank the topics presented as possible options for the therapy groups? What topics were identified as the top three? The teens ranked the possible options for groups based on the top three issues that would be important to them in a psychotherapy group. The topics that were identified as the top three for the group are: recovery from sexual abuse/assault (9), self esteem (8), and coping skills (3). Based on the information provided, what evidence exists that supports establishing a psychotherapy counseling group addressing student recovery from sexual abuse/assault? Is there other information that is missing that could be useful to make this decision? Evidence that supports establishing a psychotherapy group for addressing student recover from sexual abuse/assault includes the majority of teens voting “yes” being interested in a psychotherapy group. Another piece of evidence that supports this group is one of the top three topics chosen by the adolescents from the needs assessment included recover from sexual abuse/assault. I believe some information that could be useful would be to determine what kind of specific things the students were looking for during their recovery (a place to vent, medical help, coping skills, etc.). In your opinion, did Laurie’s approach to data collection address the purpose of the Needs Assessment? Why or why not? (Did Laurie get the information she needed to support creating a psychotherapy counseling group?)

I believe Laurie did get the information that she would need to support creating a psychotherapy counseling group. Laurie was able to determine if the adolescents would be interested in attending a group as well as specific topics they would be interested in discussing during the group. I believe this would give a good starting point to forming a psychotherapy group proposal.
