Carley Thomas Psychology of Personality 09/19/23 1. What is Mark’s attitude , according to Jungian theory? Provide evidence for your answer. - Mark has an extraversion attitude. He is outgoing on calls, he “springs into action” during fire calls, and he directs his energy to the outside world. He tends to also serve others whether that be the children in the elementary school or the people he helps on calls, and he even wanted to be on patrols rather than doing paperwork in the police academy. 2. What is Mark’s superior function , according to Jungian theory? Provide evidence for your answer. - His superior function would be thinking. He’s been described by his friends and his girlfriend as not introspective but realistic and pragmatic/ practical. He is also competent and can adapt to any situation. This would make him a thinker based on how he uses his judgment and rationality. 3. According to Jung’s theory, what archetype has Mark been influenced by? How does it influence his behavior? - Mark is influenced by the hero archetype. He exhibits this when he is in the fires by how he feels a rush when he’s on a call, he functions automatically, and he is brave but not careless. He also volunteers to spend time with elementary school students to teach them about fire safety and to have a fire plan. He also used to play a game where he was a superhero, a policeman & sheriff, or a captain when he was a child. 4. According to Jung’s theory, which part of Mark’s mind/psyche contains this archetype? Which part of Mark’s mind/psyche contains his memories of his childhood games? - His collective unconscious is the part that is his sense of self and keeps his personality or archetype. His personal unconscious remembers are an accumulation of experiences stored in his brain thus keeping his memories of his childhood games.
Theory Comparison questions 5. According to Freudian theory , which stage of psychosexual development has Mark reached? Explain. - Mark has reached the genital stage of development which means he is fully grown and has no fixations. In this stage, he is able to have relationships with both the same and opposite sex. This is seen with his friends and his recently moved-in girlfriend. They describe Mark with nice compliments and talk only about his strengths. 6. “Mark states that when he is on a call, he does not really feel fear, but rather caution – and he feels alive. When he sees the brightness of the fire and feels the heat from the flames, he functions almost automatically, performing his duties bravely but not carelessly.” According to Freudian theory , what specific energy drives this behavior in Mark? - The energy that Mark’s behavior follows would be eros. I think it's eros because it’s the life-oriented drive and he says that he feels alive on a call and he is cautious. He doesn’t act carelessly and doesn’t have near-death experiences.
