The theories that are at work in the article are behavioral and cognitive. In the article, they describe how structure learning can benefit students with the aid of autonomy support. Some teachers believe in one practice or the other. The author shows how a combination of both is more beneficial. Behavioral learning theory shows that children will respond in positive ways to learning when rewards are presented. The type of reward they use is praise. When using the structure approach teachers will use constructive feedback to assist children to realize and expand on their abilities and sense of competence (Jang, Reeve, & Deci, 2010). When using cognitive learning theory, the teacher understands that working memory is limited and gives clear instructions to the students to keep them engaged. Per Jang et al. 2010, “When teachers offer strong guidance, they provide students with the leadership and the scaffolding needed for students to instigate and maintain effort toward achieving their plans, goals, and learning objectives.” Another way that the teacher uses cognitive learning is by recognizing that students have different needs through autonomy support. Autonomy-supportive teachers encourage a student’s individuality by caring for their needs, interests, and preferences (Jang, Reeve, & Deci, 2010). When both methods are employed it can lead to positive benefits for the students. Stephen Scott Jang, H., Reeve, J., & Deci, E. L. (2010). Engaging students in learning activities: It is not autonomy support or structure but autonomy support and structure.  Journal Of Educational Psychology 102 (3), 588-600. doi:10.1037/a0019682
