According to Author Corey (2017), CBT and CRT emphasize the role of cognition in influencing emotions and behaviors. They aim to help clients identify and challenge irrational or dysfunctional beliefs that cause distress and interfere with their goals. However, CBT focuses more on the cognitive processes and structures that underlie these beliefs. CRT focuses more on clients' choices and actions (Corey, 2017). CBT and CRT use a collaborative and active approach involving homework, feedback, and skill training. However, CBT is more structured and directive. CRT is more flexible and creative, allowing the therapist and client to co-create their plan and goals (Corey, 2017). The strengths and limitations of CBT and CRT are as follows: CBT is a timeworn and evidence-based form of therapy that is effective for an extensive range of emotional issues. It helps clients develop cognitive and behavioral skills to enhance coping and resilience (Hays & Erford, 2017). However, CBT also has some limitations, such as requiring a high level of motivation and commitment from the client and a good rapport and collaboration with the therapist. CRT is a creative and flexible form of therapy that empowers clients to take responsibility for their choices and actions. It also emphasizes the importance of relationships and connection as the key to psychological well-being (Corey, 2017). However, CRT also has some limitations, such as being too confrontational and challenging for some clients, especially those who are resistant or defensive (Corey, 2017). CBT and CRT are two theories that have some compatibility and incompatibility with biblical concepts. CBT and CRT recognize the importance of cognition and belief in influencing emotions and behaviors. Romans 12:2 states, "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Zondervan, 2014). CBT and CRT encourage clients to take charge of their lives and pursue positive change. CBT and CRT also have some incompatibility with biblical concepts. CBT tends to rely on human reason and logic and may disregard or contradict the revelation of God's word. Psalms 119:104-105 states, "I gain understanding from Your precepts; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Zondervan, 2014). CRT may overlook or undervalue the role of the church and the community of faith in supporting and sustaining change. Galatians 6:6-7 shows us, Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, he shall reap" (Zondervan, 2014). CBT and CRT focus on how ideas, emotions, and mannerisms are interconnected and influence each other. Both therapies help clients identify and modify those ideas, feelings, and mannerisms. Equally, each treatment is action-oriented, goal-directed, and collaborative. However, they differ in their underlying assumptions, principles, and techniques. CBT is the assumption that psychological distress is a result of irrational thinking, and by changing these thoughts, clients can improve their emotional and behavioral outcomes. CRT, on the other hand, is based on the assumption that psychological distress results from unsuccessful relationships and that clients improve their quality of life and happiness by making better choices and taking responsibility for their actions.
