Are video games harmful? Nowadays, the use of the internet and video games have become popular in our society. Audiences obtain ideas from material portrayed in social media, one of these sources coming from video games. It has been accepted socially for some kids to be playing video games that they shouldn’t be playing, and everything they are exposed to in video games is sustaining in their minds. specifically, to observe why video games have been harmful to adults, specifically to kids. The use of video games is harmful because it does expose a lot of gun violence, and it can take effect in the mind of audiences being exposed to that material . Playing inappropriate video games that portray inappropriate language can be harmful to the development of children . It is proven that kids from ages 8- 12 play ing video games for more than 6 hours every day , develop dangerous behaviors . ( Chang & Bushman, 2019 ) . It is important to protect the mental health of children and teenagers because they will be our leaders in the future. We want good people to lead our world, but video games portraying violence have been destroying the minds of many children and teenagers by exposing them to drugs, guns, crime, and violence, therefore these ideas are making them believe they are socially acceptable. During the development of our minds, we tend to follow role models and mimic the world around us in order to fit in society, so it is important that we protect our children’s minds and have surveillance of what they are exposed to in their daily lives. Most video games that children play daily expose them to anger and anxiety, as well as dealing with drugs and violence. Out of 242 participants, 220 children (mean [SD] age, 9.9 [1.4] years; 129 [58.6%] boys) found a gun and were included in the analysis. Among the 76 children who
played the video game that had gun violence, 47 children (61.8%) touched a handgun.” ( Chang, J. H., & Bushman, B. J., 2019). This article shows how violent video games can make kids want to have an experience with guns instead of enjoying a healthy experience by riding a bike or playing with friends. Most people especially know the game Grand Theft Auto because it is a popular game since they can do all they can do and makes violence attractive to their audiences. The article “Growing Up with Grand Theft Auto” ( Coyne & Stockdale, 2021 ), is a study about 10-year-old kids of how violence grew in them. It does explain how three groups were tested 4% presented high initial violence, 23% moderate, and 73% low increases. This shows how violence can keep increasing in those kids, and most of those kids are male. In these kids, it wasn’t only depicting the violence. Most of them were depressed and demonstrated complicated behaviors. This means violent video games are changing the minds of children who even haven’t had their minds developed to understand and have the experience of differentiating between the good and the bad. Playing a video game needs all the attention of the person and not only hurts your brain but is also dangerous for your eyes ( Bedinghaus, 2022 ). Children and teenagers can spend more than 12 hours playing a video game without noticing. In 2004, a study performed in Switzerland compared obesity to the hours people spend playing ( UCLA Health, 2018 ). Most of the surveyors in this study experienced obesity during their lifetime. Thereafter, it concluded that when spending so much time playing video games, they do not perform any physical activities, and tend to favor unhealthy foods due to their busy time playing video games or due to the anxiety that they develop after playing the video game. this article, you can see some cons of the percentages of obesity of people and how much they spend playing video games. Video games are harmful to kids because they contain much wrong information for them, as it expose them to inappropriate language and it doesn’t show them ethical material. Videogames can demonstrate an easy life and easy money, and that can make education and formal jobs unattractive and acceptable to children and teenagers, making them believe they don’t need to study or work hard for what they want. It is essential to be aware of what information our kids are learning in video games because their behaviors can become unpredictable. Let’s think about a healthy mind. What does it mean by that? It does mean that we need to teach our children that the material portrayed in video games is not believable in life and that they shouldn’t be guided by what they envision. We want them to socialize with their peers in a healthy matter and for them to develop healthy behaviors that are acceptable in society. It is important to teach them that it is fine to talk about their emotions and for them to develop the confidence to communicate with others. Obesity rates have been increasing at alarming rates among children because we are allowing them to keep their eyes locked on a screen that won’t portray anything good for their minds; all that information that they would obtain from a video game is pure violence, angry issues, and evil behavior. This makes them believe that is acceptable to demonstrate disrespectful behaviors, for that reason, it is important to keep surveillance of the material that our children are exposed to in video games, and we need to teach them that life is much better than video games.
Let’s start thinking more about the kids and teenagers and what would be best for them; before buying a video game, let’s inform ourselves if it’s a beneficial game for them or not; in the back of a game, it should show if it’s an appropriate game by observing classification of the game and learn about the message that the video game will bring to its audience. Let’s create more conscience on what the kids are learning and what activities they are doing. We need to motivate our children to become involved in alternative activities other than video games, have surveillance of the video games they are exposed to, and teach them that life can be broader than just a simple video game.
