DB 504 Sexual Orientation. The ideas of addressing matters related to gender and/or sexual orientation within a counseling relationship can be an area of challenge, struggle, and anxiety for someone who experiences same-sex attraction. As you consider this week’s material, what are three notable elements from the material that helps deepen your understanding of working with these individuals? Share how those three elements impacted you (e.g., changed your perspective, thoughts, assumptions, biases, etc.) and how they impact your future counseling work. Note the following: -Always read your prompt thoroughly. -Use the questions as headings or subheadings so that you provide answers to each question in the prompt. -Remember that your initial discussion post and replies to classmates must have a word count, correct grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. -APA style must be in the current 7th edition for all posts. -Read the rubric to understand how your discussion will be graded. What are three notable elements from the material that helps deepen your understanding of working with these individuals? Paterson et al. (2024) said that sexual orientation and gender identity hate crimes receive less empathy and support but are blamed more by society. The third largest group of hate crimes is attributed to the anti-LGBTQ+ violence (Chaney & Brubaker, 2023). Counselors need to understand the cruelty that is forced onto the LGBTQ+ community as well as the negative connotations towards individuals who are not seen as identical to heterosexuals. Further, individuals who have more than one oppression, for example, a black male who is gay, can experience persecution for the same gender. Ty, in the chapter on Intersectional Issues for LGBTQ+ individuals, explained that he even gets treated differently by White gay men (Chaney & Brubaker, 2023). Reading Morales’s model can help counselors understand how LGBTQ+ individuals move through identifying states. The model can aid the counselor in comprehending the unique challenges of the LGBTQ+ community. Chaney and Brubaker (2023) state that LGBTQ+ youth experience a high percentage of verbal (68.7%) and physical harassment (25.7%) and reports of actual physical assault (11%) by other youth. These statistics do not account for the additional harassment by social media from other students. As a counselor, it is imperative to help aid and protect our youth by proactively taking steps to help advocate their voices, such as having a safe space for them to feel accepted and heard. How those three elements impacted you
Each of the above points, hate crime, same-gender oppression, and youth violence, impacted me because it was upsetting to hear of the violence against humanity. It hurt to read about such hate. We are all made and created in the image of God. We are not made to judge others for their choices but to love one another. The reading by Yarhouse and Burkett (2002) posits that having cultural differences does not mean someone endorses cultural values. Still, the individual also does not need to discriminate against a client's cultural beliefs. How they impact your future counseling work This chapter's information has helped me learn more about the LGBTQ+ community surrounding hate, violence, and bullying presented toward other humans. I may not understand others' sexual preferences, but as a Christian, other people do not understand my choice to follow Jesus. Learning more about the sexual and affectionate orientation of other individuals helps me to be humble when working with individuals being oppressed because of their choices. It is also important the counselor does not assume the client came in because of sexual orientation problems. Biblical Perspective 2 Timothy 3:12 says that anyone who wants to live daily in Jesus Christ will be persecuted (New International Version, 2011). Similarly, Christians have been oppressed because of following Jesus. A modest approach to a vulnerable community by showing grace can enormously affect the client's outcome. Therefore, it is our duty as a Christian to show respect for the individual regardless of their sexual orientation. Word count: 460 References Chaney, M. P. & Brubaker, M. D. (2023).
