When working with the couple John and Kelly I would implement the practice of Socio- Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT) to help mitigate the obvious power struggle at play. This approach helps by addressing sociocultural processes that perpetuate inequality and interfere with mutual care and support. (Kelly, 2017) I will focus on helping the couple recognize what power means in a relationship, the imbalances within the relationship, and help them practice reversing the roles of the situation to increase empathy and understanding. This form of therapy is pertinent to this couple as it is based on modifying power and gender disparities and when emotions begin in social contexts and neural systems. This approach is effective as it acknowledges that partners can support one another through recognizing historical gender power differences that are reflected in couples counseling and interactions. (Martin, 2015) Another treatment option would be Imago relationship therapy IRT where partners in committed relationships work out their misunderstandings, reduce conflict, and rediscover ways to bond, communicate, and find common ground. IRT theorizes that unconscious partner selection creates an opportunity to heal a connection that was lost in childhood by increasing empathy, understanding, and communication Imago therapists actively teach and help couples apply specific empathy-building skills through a number of explicit exercises (e.g., the couples dialogue, the imago work-up, the parent-child dialogue and holding exercise, behavior change request dialogue, caring behaviors. IRT makes empathy the central task of relationship work. (Schmidt, 2021) References Kelly, S. (2017).Diversity in Couple and Family Therapy: Ethnicities, Sexualities, and Socioeconomics.
