CNL-500 Topic 2_ Classical Theory Comparison Worksheet.pdf
Summary
2800 Words CNL-500 Topic 2: Classical Theory Comparison Worksheet
Directions: Compare the three theories by answering the questions listed below for each
theory
as indicated. For the first two questions in the table, each theory should include a 75-100-
word
explanation. Include a minimum of two scholarly resources for each theory (total of six
resources) in addition to the course textbook and include in-text citations when
appropriate.
Include a full APA formatted reference for the sources used below.
Explain the goals for therapy from each theoretical orientation. (75-100 words each)
Neoanalytic
Neoanalytic treatment is a descendant of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. Some
of the
techniques and theories are similar to those used in psychoanalytic thought. The
difference between the two
is that neo analytic theory emphasizes personality psychology, which is concerned with
an individual's sense
of self, rather than sexuality as the core of human activity. The self represents the ego
and the essence of
one's personality. The objective of neoanalytic therapy is to help people see and
comprehend how their ego
interacts with their surroundings and with the people around them. It is also concerned
with how these
factors influence one's ego. The objective of neoanalytic therapy, according to Murdock,
is to understand and
assist the client in improving how the ego interacts with and is impacted by the
environment (society,
culture, other individuals). (2107).
Identify at least two techniques for each theory and the benefit to the client. (75-100
words
each)
Technique 1:
Free Association
Through free association, the counselor encourages the individual to talk honestly about
whatever is on
their mind. The counselor does not pass judgment or impose censorship on the client. The
counselor takes note
of any pauses and/or slips of the tongue. This might indicate that these slips of the
tongue have hidden
meanings, or that the interruptions are bringing up suppressed and anxiety-provoking
material for the client. “By
identifying and interpreting unconscious material as it emerges, the counselor helps the
individual achieve
deeper insight” (Psychoanalysis/Modern Psychoanalysis, 2017).
Technique 2:
Interpretation
Interpretation is used to examine and comprehend the client's unconscious
communication as well as any
previous disagreements. “Interpretation is the verbal communication by the analyst of

the hypothesis of an
unconscious conflict that seems to have dominantly emerged now in the patient's
communication in the
therapeutic encounter.” (Kern, 2016)
Benefit to the Client:
The client will not feel the need to censor themselves during treatment sessions because
of free
association. They will be able to trust that they may speak whatever is on their mind
without fear of being
judged. This may assist the client in finally getting to the source of their difficulties in
treatment, and if they are
unsure what is creating the difficulties in their lives, free association will assist them in
bringing it to the
forefront of their minds. When clients are able to express themselves, the counselor is
able to comprehend what
is going on and assist them in recognizing the behaviors that may cause them difficulties.
This will allow the
counselor to assist the client in replacing negative behaviors with positive ones
.. “The
counselor is able to
interpret the information and assist the client with relating to the unconscious behaviors,
allowing the client to
replace them with desirable ones.” (Murdock, 2017)
List the stages of counseling and how long it would take to complete the process.
In the neoanalytic method, the therapist will go through various phases with the client.
The first step
involves the therapist connecting with the client and developing a rapport with them. The
following step is
doing an in-depth examination with the client in order to comprehend and acknowledge
the difficulty that the
client is now experiencing with their behavior. This stage necessitates the counselor
knowing everything they
can about the client's life and behavior. Following that, the following step involves having
understanding and
feelings that may be linked with the client's underlying problem. At this stage, the
counselor will assist the client
in locating answers and interventions to the situation. Finally, the client will absorb the
counselor's
understanding in order to go on and make positive adjustments in their lives. The
duration of neoanalytic
treatment will vary depending on the client. It might take years to finish. When the client
is able to move on
with good adjustments in their life, termination will be explored.
List the counselor’s and client’s roles
Counselor’s Roles:
In neoanalytic therapy, the counselor will opt to play a neutral and objective position. The
therapist can use
one of two ways. If the counselor decides to play the authoritarian position, the client will
be guided through
the interpretations. If the therapist decides to treat the client as an ally, he or she will
"work with the client to
comprehend the unconscious mind" (Murdock, 2017)
Client’s Roles:
The part that the counselor chooses to play will affect the part that the client will play. If
the therapist takes
the authoritarian position, the client must be open and honest with the counselor and
accept the therapist's
interpretations. If they are allies, they will collaborate to comprehend what is going on in
the client's
unconscious mind.
List the three qualities of a healthy person for each theory.
1.During neoanalytic treatment, a healthy individual has a strong sense of self. The
person's positive
connections are jeopardized by this feeling of self. (Murdock, 2017)
2. Another attribute of a healthy individual, according to Murdock, is the ability to

Jungian
The primary purpose of Jungian theory is to help the conscious and unconscious come
together in
order to help the individual achieve self-actualization and find equilibrium. “Not only who

how to do this will
be able to form good relationships.
Identify at least two techniques for each theory and the benefit to the client. (75-100
words
each)
Technique 1:
Amplification
The client is asked to explain what happens in their dreams to the counselor during
dream analysis.
They're encouraged to speak whatever comes to mind right now. The counselor will try to
decipher the
dream by looking beyond the obvious meaning in order to uncover the client's
unconscious intentions and
thoughts.“Communication and discussion of dreams is generally facilitated by attention
to the symbols
and metaphors which provide imaginistic descriptions of these ephemeral experiences
that are frequently
nonverbal.” (
Cambray & Carter, 2004)
.
Technique 2:
Active imagination
The client is encouraged to interpret the contents of their dream using this approach. This
is to be
done without the client contributing any analysis from their conscious mind. . “The goal of
this process is
to understand the workings of the unconscious mind.” (
Goodtherapy, 2019) Drawing,
writing, painting, or
any other kind of art can be used to accomplish this. After that, the counselor will explain
the meanings of
the universal symbols that the client was able to generate throughout their
interpretation.

self. Transference will
be crucial to a client's growth and highly crucial at this point. The client will reflect onto
the counselor the
elements of themselves that are being explored in therapy.
2. Elucidation: During this stage, the counselor will investigate the transference from the
client to the
therapist. The counselor will then investigate the cause of the transference.“In the
second stage patients learn
to distinguish between the personal and impersonal aspects of the transferential
dynamics. That is to
differentiate what is from their own unconscious and what is from cultural, social, or
‘collective
unconscious’”. (
Kerrisk, 2011)

4. Transformation: This is the stage at which customers will achieve or come close to
achieving
self-actualization
.. “People who achieve self-actualization have achieved a balance
between their conscious
and unconscious as well as between the external environment and their internal psyche.”
(Murdock, 2017)
While Jung believes that reaching this level is not impossible, it does not happen very
often.
List the counselor’s and client’s roles
Counselor’s Roles:
In Jungian therapy, the counselor's role is to help the client in balancing and integrating
their
unconscious and conscious brains in order to make them whole. Throughout treatment,
the counselor will
remain objective and abstain from imposing their own views and interpretations on the
client.
Client’s Roles:
The client's job is to collaborate with the counselor by openly talking and disclosing facts
about their
lives. It is critical that the client be honest and open in order for the counselor to assist
the client in achieving
their treatment objectives. They will collaborate to grasp the specifics of what arises
from the client's
unconscious and conscious minds. Murdock claims that the client and therapist would
collaborate to
understand knowledge and shift it from unconscious thinking to conscious conduct. (2017)
List the three qualities of a healthy person for each theory.
1A happy balance between introversion and extroversion would have been found by a
healthy individual.
(Murdock, 2017)
2. Murdock predicts that the subconscious will have a healthy balance of sensation and
intuition. (2017)
3. A balance between a person's act of feeling and thinking will be another aspect
(Murdock, 2017).
Individual Psychology
Individual psychology aims to match an individual's goals with those of society. It focuses
on how
social interests stifle an individual's motivation. This might be due to cultural pressures,
desires for success,
or superiority emotions. This demands the capacity of the individual to grasp how their
current behaviors
are impacted by future expectations.“In order to achieve this, the individual must
understand how they
interact with the world.” (Adler, 2019)

Catching Oneself
The counselor must interrupt the client's self-defeating behavior and any harmful routines
in order to
use this method. The counselor helps the client see patterns of behavior that lead to
negative feelings and
actions. The goal is to help the client avoid and prevent these types of behaviors. “The
therapist helps clients
anticipate the behavior earlier until the client learns to ‘catch themselves before
engaging in the undesirable
behavior or habit.” (Therapist Techniques-IResearchNet, 2016)
Technique 2:
Acting As If
This approach is utilized to have the client act as though they are already in the role or
position they
want to be in. The counselor does not try to persuade the client that they have the
desired behavior; instead,
they advise the client to "act as if" they have the desired trait that they believe they lack.
“The new
behaviors are ‘acting’ and not ‘real’, the clients feel less threatened by trying the new
behaviors.” (Therapist
Techniques-IResearchNet, 2016) When the client adopts the behaviors as their own, they
will eventually
feel more comfortable with them.
Benefit to the Client:
These strategies are effective because they motivate and encourage the client to put
themselves in the
position that they desire. Alternatively, participate in an activity that you desire to
participate in. It can also
help the client become more responsible and handle any behavioral issues they may be
experiencing. It also
pushes students to put their newfound abilities to work outside of therapy. “Practitioners
utilize this
technique to assist clients in altering perspectives about themselves and explore the un-
recalled behaviors
they may exhibit.” (Murdock, 2017)
List the stages of counseling and how long it would take to complete the process.
1. Engagement: “A trusting therapeutic relationship is built between the counselor and
the person in therapy
and they agree to work together to effectively address the problem.” (
Adlerian
Psychology, Psychotherapy,
and Techniques, 2011) At this level, the counselor ensures that attentive behavior and
active listening are
used. This is done to establish a trusting relationship with the client and to make the
customer feel
understood. The counselor will instill confidence in the client that they have the ability to
modify their habit.
At this stage, the counselor will work with the client to establish specific therapeutic
goals.
2. Assessment: At this stage, the counselor will examine the client's lifestyle. They will
ask the customer
questions about his or her life in order to better comprehend the customer's lifestyle and
objectives. “The
therapist invites the individual to speak about his or her personal history, family history,
early recollections,
beliefs, feelings, and motives. This helps to reveal the person's overall lifestyle pattern,
including factors that
might initially be thought of as insignificant or irrelevant by the person in therapy.”
(
Adlerian Psychology,
Psychotherapy, and Techniques, 2011)
3. Insight:
”The counselor helps the client to understand his lifestyle and become aware of
how he chooses to
function and why
” (Murdock, 2017) This stage is intended to assist the client in
developing new ways of
thinking about their lifestyle and how they like to function.
4. Reorientation: This is the stage in which the client collaborates with the counselor to
develop new ways of
acting. The therapist and client will collaborate to develop new objectives that are more
socially suitable and
feasible. “The therapist encourages the individual to engage in satisfying and effective

List the counselor’s and client’s roles
Counselor’s Roles:
The therapist's role in individual psychology is identical to that of the client. The
counselor will avoid
giving the impression that he or she is superior to the client. The client will also be
educated by the
counselor. This suggests that the counselor will approach the client in a directive and
forceful manner. The
therapist must be pleasant and human while dealing with the client. This implies that the
counselor will
admit any fault and will have a brave outlook on life by admitting any errors made by the
counselor.
Client’s Roles:
In the partnership, the client will take on the role of the learner. Because the client is
regarded to be an
expert in their own life, the information they will give about their lives and experiences is
valuable. It
enables the counselor to apply these insights and experiences to theory in order to
achieve the goals that were
specified.
List the three qualities of a healthy person for each theory.
1. A healthy individual will have a strong social interest. They will also contribute to
society, according to
Murdock. (2017).
2. They will be able to face their problems with bravery and find solutions using socially
helpful
approaches. Murdock is a fictional character (2017).
3. They will also make a positive contribution to society, succeed in their jobs and other
obligations, and
find work that is socially useful. Murdock is a fictional character (2017).
