Initial Topic Assignment (20 points) Please type your answers directly into this document and upload your assignment to Blackboard by the deadline stated in the syllabus. PLEASE make your answers a different colored font from the questions!!! Background The purpose of this assignment is to generate ideas for the psychological study you will write a research proposal for as your final paper. Basically, pretend you are given unlimited resources to design a study to test a psychological research question. Throughout the semester, you will be writing a literature review on your topic, a method section, a discussion section, and an abstract. After submitting each assignment, you will receive feedback to use to edit your sections. At the end of the semester, you will combine all of your edited sections into one document and submit your final research proposal. Instructions Generating your initial topics is the first step in this process. Come up with 2 topic ideas and answer the questions below for each topic. Each question is worth 2 points (for a total of 10 points per topic and 20 points overall). After answering the set of questions for Topic Idea #1 and Topic Idea #2, highlight the idea you like best. Refer to the Week 2 lecture slides to help you with this assignment. You will receive feedback on this assignment with our (instructor + TA) thoughts about what topic may be the most appropriate for this scope of this class. Remember, you are not actually conducting your study, so your methodology can be complex, but you want your scope to be broad enough that you can write about it, but not too narrow that you can’t find any sources down the line to help you. Our feedback will help you determine that balance and you will use the feedback from this assignment to help you with the future Final Topic Assignment. Warning: I hope this goes without saying, but your topic must be related to psychology. You will not get points if it’s not related to psychology. Example: What type of fertilizer is best for growing tomatoes? is not a viable topic it’s not related to psychology Example: Do students enrolled in online class or hybrid classes get better grades? Also not a viable topic you’re not measuring or testing a psychology concept; better suited for educational research
TOPIC IDEA #1 What is my research question ( not just topic )? - What are the factors that contribute to the success of virtual therapy in treating anxiey and depression? What is the main IV/PV I want to investigate? How will I operationally define it? - I need to investigate the use of virtual therapy in treating anxiety and depression. I will operationally define this by measuring the frequency and duration of virtual therapy session and the type of therapy that being used. What is the main DV/CV I want to investigate? How will I operationally define it? - The effectiveness of virtual therapy in treating anxiety and depression. I will operationally define this by measuring changes in anxiety and depression symptoms as reported on scale. What is my hypothesis? - The used of virtual therapy will be an effective method for treating anxiety and depression, and that there will be a significant decrease in symptoms for individuals who receive virtual therapy compared to those who receive no treatment or alternative form of treatment. Will you conduct an experiment or use a non-experimental method (e.g., survey)? - I will conduct a non-experimental method. TOPIC IDEA #2 What is my research question ( not just topic )? - What is the impact of mindfulness meditation on stress reduction in college students? What is the main IV/PV I want to investigate? How will I operationally define it? - The independent variable in this study is mindfulness meditation, which will be operationally defined as a formal mindfulness individuals focus on the present moment and their thoughts and feelings without judgment. What is the main DV/CV I want to investigate? How will I operationally define it? - The dependent variable is stress reduction, which will be operationally defined as a decrease in self-reported stress levels. What is my hypothesis? - College students who participate in mindfulness meditation will experience a significant reduction in their stress levels compared to a control group who does not participate in mindfulness meditation. Will you conduct an experiment or use a non-experimental method (e.g., survey)? - I will use a non-experimental method, specifically a survey design, to investigate the impact of mindfulness mediation on a stress reduction in college students.
