Reflection Paper 1. What are the names of the individuals in this film? The names of the individuals in this film are Tracy Mellor and Dr. Don Crawford 2. What were the professions and/or roles (such as student, parent etc) the individuals in this video held at the time they were diagnosed? Tracy Mellor earned her Bachelors in Psychology and Masters in Counseling. Published poems and worked 20 years in an Insurance company Dr. Crawford Bachelors degree in Human Resources/Management and a Masters in Arts and Counseling. Worked full time in Counseling. 3. What is the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI). What type of support and services does NAMI provide? How has NAMI impacted the individuals in this video? The National Alliance for Mental Illness is a national organization that is dedicated to build better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. They advocate their support and treatment options. The type of support they offer is great resources about mental illness, offer support groups, have online discussion groups, a NAMI helpline, and outstanding peer-led programs that provide free education. 4. What were the mental health diagnoses given to the individuals? What other contributing factors led to their diagnosis? Tracy Mellor was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 disorder, PTSD, Panic disorder, Socialphobia Dr. Crawford was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 disorder. What led to this was the loss of 5 jobs and was hyper. Antidepressants did not work.
5. What were the symptoms the individuals experienced as a result of their diagnosis? In what ways did these symptoms impact their functioning? The symptoms were manic episodes, spending money as if one has plenty, speaking rapidly, lack of sleep, wandering and expressing hatred to society. 6. Describe their treatment experiences such as inpatient, outpatient and other treatment opportunities. Tracy explained that talking to the psychiatrist was an immediate diagnosis with Bipolar 1. She threw away her medication and began her manic episodes after 6 years of no medication. Dr. Crawford was not given much help until he went to visit the behavioral health at a psychiatric hospital and found acceptance and identity through people who have suffered through the same mental illness. Dr. Crawford also said he visits a psychiatrist and therapist once a week that helped him set a patch of acceptance. 7. What type of barriers did these individuals experience in terms of accessing and during the treatment process? There is a financial barrier for accessing the treatment process. Medications may or may not help the individual because it can do more damage to vital organs. 8. Did these individuals experience Anosognosia? (https://www.nami.org/About-Mental-Illness/Common-with-Mental-Illness/Anosognosia) If so, how did this medical condition impact these individuals in terms of accessing treatment? At a point in their lives, these individuals did experience Anosognosia. This medical condition impacted these individuals in terms of accessing treatment by finding self-awareness with their mental illness. Accessing the treatment and staying in the treatment was impacted greatly. Tracy
stated it well when she did do her treatment early on, she then stopped and then her manic episodes began to progress greatly. This was because she had difficulty understanding herself because she never experienced something like that before. Same thing with Dr. Crawford, before being self aware he struggled with himself and had no understanding with his mental illness. 9. What resources and/or interventions led to successful treatment outcomes? What type of coping mechanisms do these individuals continue to utilize? Learning ways to accept themselves and having peers support along the way like being around people that have similar struggles. This was a way to find identity. They continue to take charge of their illness without having the illness take charge of them. They continue to also learn to cope through studying about their illness to find equilibrium. Another type of coping is being aware of stressors and staying in contact with professional help. 10. How could Recreation Therapy interventions support these individuals' continued journey to a healthy life? Recreation Therapy interventions can support these individuals by providing a sense of enjoyment in life. This type of therapy reduces stress and anxiety in individuals who are recovering from any injury or illness. For example, Tracy loves doing arts and crafts. She states that this helps her ease her anxiety and find peace within herself. Recreation therapy can offer more activities that can build confidence as they are adjusting their lives during and after recovery. Recreation Therapy utilizes what the individual enjoys to do. Finding meaning in life through recreation.
