The article " Yoga for Veterans With PTSD: Cognitive Functioning, Mental Health, and Salivary Cortisol " This particular study investigated the effect of a yoga intervention on cognition, PTSD, and the biological stress response in Veterans. The sampling method used was a quasi- experimental one. Quasi-experiments are studies that seek to assess the impact of a particular intervention and do not use randomization. Quasi-experiments aim to establish the basis and reason between an intervention and an outcome. They also involve the manipulation of an independent variable without randomly assigning participants who were selected based on convenience. (Gray & Grove, 2020). The quasi-experimental method needed to be improved in the study, as these types of experiments have less control over the management of settings, participant selection, and implementation of interventions. (Gray & Grove, 2020). First, the veterans were required to collect the samples independently, at home, three times a day for one day. Participants were asked to take the samples when they woke up, thirty minutes after walking, and at bedtime, and store them in the refrigerator until the swabbed samples were delivered to the VA for testing. They were given verbal instructions with a demonstration and a handout to review at home. With the lack of monitoring in the actual sampling process, the accuracy and validity of the samples couldn't be verified, which is also known as a threat to validity. (Gray & Grove, 2020). "To Err is human," right? While some may think the Quasi-experimental method was a weakness in and of itself, it's debatable. While not randomized, these experiments can provide evidence of change that is more significant than evidence yielded without a control or comparison group. They also allow for changes within the plan once the intervention has started. Requiring fewer resources and being more cost-effective and performed at the population produces results more relative to the studied population. (James et al., 2017). According to Elfil & Negida, when doing a research study, we should consider the sample of participants as an example of the target population being studied. The overall goal of the study was to examine the effects of TSY on response inhibition, PTSD symptoms, and cortisol levels in veterans with PTSD. (Zaccari et al., 2020). The results from this study reinforce the practice of Yoga to improve cognitive function related to PTSD and the improvement of mental health, including improved sleep and quality of life.
