Andrea De Paz EC 199 16 February 2021 Julian’s Towel 1. What elements of positive behavior support can you identify? That is, what strategies were used to reduce Julina’s throwing and biting behaviors? There were 4 elements of positive behavior supports/strategies that were used to help reduce Julian’s throwing and biting behaviors. His teachers first,“limited the number of children who could play in the small manipulative area at any one time.” They also worked on giving Julian his own towel space of his favorite Disney characters and taught the other students that it was Julian’s space. The students were also taught to ask for permission if they wished to play in Julian’s space with him. Julian was also taught a replacement behavior for when children bumped him or became too close to him, he was to extend his arms “to convey ‘you’re too close.’” The last behavior support strategie was if Julian bit someone or had an outburst he was immediately removed from the area and placed in a “less preferred play center.” 2. What was Julian trying to communicate by throwing toys and biting? As the teachers worked together with the support specialist using the A-B-C analysis, they were able to determine why Julian was throwing toys and biting. They realized that Julian was “most likely to be aggressive when other children became too close to him.” His teachers reported that he was entertaining himself by dumping the Legos back and forth from one container to another when in the manipulative play area. Overall Julian was trying to communicate that his classmates were too closer to him. He might have felt overwhelmed with being around so many students and just starting a new Head Start program. Although he has down syndrome he was in a way still able to communicate a feeling and create an appropriate way of expressing it with the help of his teachers. 3. What are possible reasons why Julian was more interested in “dumping and filling” the containers of Legos, than in playing “appropriately” with the Legos? I believe there could be countless of correct reasons why Julian was more interested in “dumping and filling” the containers of Legos than playing “appropriately” with the Legos. The main reason I believe that could be a possibility was that Julian enjoyed the sound and motion of “dumping and filling” the Lego containers. Julian could have also felt more in control with the Legos because he is determining where they end up instead of having to focus on building them and taking them apart. I believe having to take the time to focus in on the build and having the patience to manipulate the toys “correctly” was something that made him strain away from the correct use of the toys. Julian seemed to prefer manipulating the toys by dumping them instead of building them. After a while Julian was able to play with a peer in dumping and filling a toy dump truck with Legos.
Andrea De Paz EC 199 16 February 2021 4. Do you think the typical characteristics of Down syndrome may have contributed to Julian’s play behavior? I believe that only some of the typical characteristics of Down Syndrome may contribute to Julian’s play behaviors but not all. I do think his reason for wanting to dump and fill the lego containers was because of the sound and motion the legos made. Typically individuals with down syndrome do not like loud noises. It can cause anxiety because their ears are on the more sensitive side. When Julian would dump the Legos, there was always a loud sound produced. I personally like the noise because it’s really satisfying to hear the noise of the crashing Legos. I also do believe that maybe the typical characteristics of Down syndrome did contribute to Julian’s play behavior because he did not want to play with or around others.
