Report
DQ 4.1 # 1 The American Psychological Association (2017) recommends several evidence-based treatments for PTSD and trauma-related issues, including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), cognitive therapy (CT), prolonged exposure therapy (PE), brief eclectic psychotherapy (BEP), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and narrative exposure therapy (NET). These approaches share a focus on psychoeducation, offering insights into post-traumatic stress reactions, coping mechanisms for trauma triggers, and strategies for managing emotional distress. Additionally, emotional regulation, coping skills, cognitive processing and restructuring, and imaginal exposure and memory processes are standard features across diverse therapeutic methods (Schnyder et al., 2015). While these approaches utilize common language and terminology, Schnyder et al. (2015) acknowledge significant client variations related to ethnicity, culture, and trauma history. Emphasizing the importance of cultural adaptation, they suggest tailoring interventions to align with each client's unique needs and values. Lastly, Herman (2022) reminds us that the effectiveness of therapy hinges not solely on the chosen intervention or fundamental principles of trauma treatment but on establishing a solid and secure therapeutic relationship between the client and the counsellor.
