Module 4 Discussion Post Template Describe one recent (within the last 20 years) example of scientific misconduct. What type of misconduct occurred? Dr. Anil Potti’s Cancer Research. “Dr, Potti resigned his position at Duke University after it was discovered that he had exaggerated his credentials, claiming incorrectly that he was a Rhodes Scholar. This discovery led the American Cancer Society to suspend hundreds of thousands of grant dollars that were to be used for Potti’s research. Since then, nine of his papers have been on individualized treatments for cancer have been retracted dashing the hopes of those who would like to believe that this "holy grail of cancer" research might actually work. Potti’s work sounded like a miracle, but his promise that 80% of patients enrolled in his drug trials would find the right drug for them proved too good to be true, and some of the patients involved with Potti’s research have filed suit against Duke. (Mintz. 2012.) Regarding your example, should the scientific research be discounted or thrown out? Why or why not? Yes, According to The Washington Post article, “ Scientist Falsified Data for Cancer Research Once Described as ‘Holy Grail,’ states that the Office of Research Integrity (ORI), the agency that investigates fraud in federally funded medical research, says that the data generated by Potti was altered to produce the results desired by the researcher. False data was also submitted to obtain further grants for research, it concluded, citing a claim by Potti that 6 of 33 patients responded favorably to a test when only 4 patients were enrolled in the trial, none of them responding positively. ” (Barbash. 2015.)
