Ethical Consultation Grand Canyon University PSY-510: Contemporary and Ethical Issues in Psychology Katie Wick January 31, 2024 1
Ethical Consultation Ethical Issues A few potential ethical issues involved in Dr. Jamison’s situation are confidentiality and potential boundary violations. Standard 4.01 states that psychologists have a primary obligation and take reasonable precautions to protect confidential information through any stored medium (American Psychological Association, 2003) . Regarding testimonials, standard 5.05 says that psychologists do not solicit testimonials from current clients (American Psychological Association, 2003) . Section K.4.c Social Media of the CRCC outlines that counselors need to clearly explain to clients as part of the informed consent procedure, the benefits, limitations, and boundaries of the use of social media in the provision of services (Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification, 2022) . Boundary violations can occur when clients start messaging the counselor on social media outside of therapeutic use, friend requests, or even commenting on pictures or comments on their pages. If the counselor performs these tasks it violates the boundary as well. The exception to this ethical guideline to avoid these non- professional relationships is if the association is beneficial to the client or former client (Crtalic et al., 2015) . Steps upon Discovery of Potential Ethical Concerns Upon discovering these ethical concerns she should first consult the APA ethical guidelines and principles, the CRCC guidelines, and the ACA ethical guidelines to understand if there has been a violation and what standard/ethic was violated. After reviewing the guidelines she should meet with the group practice members and bring her concerns to their attention. If the group follows the ethical standards and guidelines they should be able to acknowledge her 2
concerns and work to remedy the situation to ensure ethically safe concern for their clients. If the group does not acknowledge the concerns and violations then Dr. Jamison should seek legal advice and per standard 1.05 of the Code of Ethics, request a referral to a state or national committee on professional ethics, state licensing boards, or an appropriate institutional board (American Psychological Association, 2003) . A tool that Dr. Jamison could use in her ethical dilemma per the ACA Code of Ethics Section I.1.b is they use and document, as appropriate, an ethical decision-making model that may include, but is not limited to, consultation; consideration of relevant ethical standards, principles, and laws; generation of potential courses of action; deliberation of risks and benefits; and selection of an objective decision based on the circumstances and welfare of all involved (American Counseling Association, 2014) . Recommendations for Group Advertising Recommendations to meet ethical standards in advertising for the group would be to make sure that the testimonials are anonymous and that they do not contain any identifying information. For each patient who submits a testimonial, there should be an informed consent on file that states how the testimonial will be used on the social media platform. The psychologist should not solicit any testimonials from the clients, it should be a voluntary process on behalf of the client. Finally, they should follow APA standard 5 of the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Section H of the ACA 2014 Code of Ethics. Conclusion In conclusion, Dr. Jamison should carefully consider following the other psychologists in their practice of social media usage and whether it is ethically appropriate. Having her picture and a minimal bio that is limited to her education and training, and does not contain any personal 3

information, is acceptable. For the testimonials, she will need to bring up the subject of ethical violations to the groups so that they can remedy the infractions. Hopefully, the group will investigate and remedy the violations. The worst-case scenario is that she will need to report the psychologist to an ethics committee. 4
