Review the preamble and general principles section of the code of ethics. What is the purpose of these sections? In reviewing the general principles, which do you feel is the most impactful or influential to the practice of psychology? Explain. The preamble is part of the code of ethics as a general introduction and it outlines its purpose. The preamble also explains the goals of the code and sets the tone for the rest of the code. The purpose of the general principles is to guide and inspire psychologists toward the highest ethical ideal of the profession (American Psychological Association, 2017). The general principles are aspirational in nature and do not represent obligations (American Psychological Association, 2017). While all the general principles are very important, I feel that Principle A, Beneficence and Nonmaleficence, are most impactful in psychology. As a nurse, nonmaleficence is at the forefront of everything I do. In striving to do good, beneficence, and doing no harm, nonmaleficence, the other principles tend to fall in line and are accomplished. Psychologists seek to promote the welfare of others, treating people and animals humanely, and improving the condition of individuals, organizations, and society (Fisher, 2022).
