In the past, researchers in psychology used some "ethically questionable" research techniques. Do you believe that some of these techniques were useful despite their ethical shortcomings? Explain. How did these “ethically questionable” techniques lead to the creation of the code of ethics? Ethically questionable research techniques, although some were horrific, enabled us to learn some valuable information. Take for instance the Tuskegee syphilis experiment. This study was very unethical and hundreds of men suffered. These men did not give proper consent, there was minimal compensation, and no compassion for their suffering. Unfortunately, without this study it may have been many more years and lives lost before we knew that penicillin was the best treatment or even what the effects of the disease were. We learned about the progression of disease and its effects on the human body. The code of ethics was created because of many of these ethically questionable research techniques. The creation of the APA Ethics Code was driven by the desire for standards that to encourage the highest endeavors of psychologists, ensure public welfare, promote sound relationships with allied professions, and further the professional standing of the discipline (Fisher, 2022). An interesting statement in the textbook says that “the need for an ethics code in psychology arose in response to an increase in professional activity and public visibility of its members before and after WWII” (Fisher, 2022). This can be interpreted in a way that the code was created to protect the professionals and not the public. Depending on where you stand, this could be an interesting topic to discuss.
