Implicit personality theory refers to the idea that people have a naturally assume that certain traits or characteristics go together. In other words, this theory explores the different ways in which personalities are formed. The theory suggests that when you meet a person you form a general assumption of a person’s personality by observing their most apparent traits. It is a cognitive framework through which individuals organize and make sense of information about personality traits and behaviors. Essentially, it's a set of assumptions or beliefs that individuals hold about the relationships among various personality traits. Our subconsciousness forms these assumptions because of the way our mind process information. This could be like because a person smiles a lot, they must be warm and welcoming. It is unclear if that is true just by simply observation. Implicit personality theories are often formed through personal experiences, cultural influences, and societal norms. They help individuals simplify and organize information about others, allowing for quicker judgments and decision-making. However, it's important to note that implicit personality theories can lead to stereotypes and biases, as they involve making assumptions about individuals based on limited information. With research and the study of implicit personality theory we will learn to get a better understanding of how people form impressions of others and how the shape social interactions and relationships. Implicit personality theory can be used as a way to enhance impression management in several ways. Impression management involves the conscious or unconscious process through which individuals attempt to control or influence the perceptions that others have of them ( Mandal, S., Sahay, A., Terron, A., & Mahto, K. 2021) . If an individual understands the implicit personality theories that others display, they may strategically align their behaviors with the traits that are positively perceived. Implicit personality theories often assume that certain traits can occur together. A person can highlight consistent behaviors that reinforce positive traits.
Consistency in behavior can reinforce the implicit beliefs that others hold. Implicit personality theories can sometimes lead to stereotyping. Some people look at a person and make assumptions that can challenge preconceived notions. Implicit personality theories often reflect cultural and societal norms. Aligning with these norms can enhance the acceptability and likeability of an individual within a particular social group ( Mandal, S., Sahay, A., Terron, A., & Mahto, K. 2021) . This means if a person conforms to their setting, then they may unconsciously change to fit in to a social group. Attempts to manipulate perceptions that come across as inauthentic or deceptive may have negative consequences. Successful impression management may need to find a balance between the implicit beliefs and being genuine to who you really are. A celebrity that used impression management to create a certain image would be Michael B. Jordan. A few years ago, Michael B. Jordan was named the sexiest man alive this title prompted Amazon to hire him to be an AI Alexa voice and sex symbol for the amazon Alexa Echo. Michael B. Jordan was labeled sexiest man alive by People’s magazine in 2020 (Jordan, 2020). People paired the attribute with Alexa that he endorsed, and this increased the need and want of the product. The role of implicit personality theory played a role regarding the image that Michael B. Jordan created with his motion pictures, mannerism which women find so sexy and professionalism which turned him into a national sex symbol. This in return is good for marketing and sales. Amazon sold Alexa Echo at an alarming rate because Jordan was the AI voice. They sold 65 million Alexa Echo’s in 2021 opposed to 53 million in 2020 (Statista, 2022). The Alexa commercial received 110.9 million views as it aired during the Super Bowl these broke records with Fast and Furious 9 coming in at number 2 at 110.6 million (D'Alessandro,

2021). After Jordan was voted the sexiest man alive, he wore that title as he continued to do more commercials, changing the way he carried himself and upgrading his style. Impression management and implicit personality theory can have significant implications for social welfare and social change have a positive and negative impact. Within the realm of social psychology raising awareness about implicit biases can reduce prejudice attitudes and behaviors, this can help promote diversity and inclusion to help with positive change ( Mandal, S., Sahay, A., Terron, A., & Mahto, K. 2021) . Impression management can enhance communication and collaboration by fostering positive relationships. Studies in organizational psychology is big on the importance of impression management in the workplace ( Zandi, G., Ahmad, S., Shahid, M. S., & Shahzad, I. A. 2023). This intel’s that effective communication and people skills can build teamwork and have better organizational outcomes. Impression management also helps in advancing social justice movements to help shape public opinions and support for their causes. When we take a look at history of social justice movements, they have used communication to effectively influence the publics opinion and promote policy changes ( Zandi, G., Ahmad, S., Shahid, M. S., & Shahzad, I. A. 2023). Those activists who are a public image attract attention and support through a broad view. Ways that impression management and implicit personality theory can negatively affect social welfare would be manipulative advances started by individuals or groups that can lead to misinformation or stereotypes for their own personal gain. That means we should have an understanding of these terms and concepts to help promote positive change. I have used impression management in my own personal and professional life is by managing what I put on social media. I know that not only do I have personal connections on social media, but I also have professional ones too. So, what I display or portray on social media
is positive like photos of my children and their accomplishments or ventures that I am having with my wife. I even post my travelling, exercise and weight loss journey. This type of impression management has been beneficial because when I go in public, and people see me I am not judged for the negative things that may occur in my life but for the positivity I have displayed.
