Psychological Testing and Assessment Grand Canyon University CNL 523: Assessment, Test, and Measurements 2
Psychological Testing and Assessment Testing and Assessments are a vital part of the therapeutic process. Through these processes, you can see how the clients perceive certain aspects such as daily life or how certain issues are affecting their lives. Psychological assessments are being able to obtain and comprehend the data that is collected when test, assessments, cases studies, and behavioral observations are given (Cohen et.al,2022). The goal is to make sure that everything learned through the specific type of testing can be utilized to make sure the therapeutic runs smoothly and leads towards the proper intervention. The client’s culture and what they represent is an important factor that needs to be to be observed and considered during this gathering of information. The diagnosis is determined after the assessment and the conversation that points the counselor in a direction to pursue the appropriate assistance. This is when the concern is directed towards the treatment and prevention of the behavior that is affecting the client’s life in an negative way (Cohen et.al,2022). It is important that we have the proper selection of tests or assessments that have a focus on making the proper section, diagnostic factors, and making sure the test is the right one for the client’s demographic. Resources to Help with Test/Assessment Selection There are many ways to look for the appropriate test/assessment to use for clients. The resources can include the DSM-TR which provides descriptions in detail of the different potential diagnosis that a client may have and different tests or assessments that can be helpful to recognize what the client is dealing with. The APA offers the PsycTest database, which contains thousands of exams and information on their creation and use. The Pearson Assessment is a website that provides a database of different tests or assessments used to help understand what a 3
client is dealing with. An example of a test that this resource provides is the Beck Depression Inventory II is used to gain a understanding of depression, and how it impact the person(Beck et.al,1996). This then creates the beginning of a conversation that allows chances to provide quality help. Then you can use the DSM-VTr to see the criteria met for what type of depression or any of the other disorders provide. Coworkers and managers with experience might offer insightful suggestions and counsel regarding test selection based on their own professional experiences. Psychological testing and assessment workshops, webinars, and courses are provided by numerous professional organizations and training programs. Test publishers frequently offer manuals, technical papers, and research articles that are filled with information on their tests. Diagnostic Factors A counselor should examine the selection of a psychological test for a client as to the various diagnostic criteria. These factors help ensure that the test is suitable for the client's specific situation and can provide valuable insights into their mental health. The first important factor I believe is the clients’ age and how they have developed so far in their life (APA,2022). It is essential to ensure that the test is appropriate for them, and the same applies to adults. It is crucial to ensure they comprehend what is being presented to them. The next aspect should be the cultural and their verbal background. It should consider the client's cultural background and language proficiency to avoid misinterpretation or bias. The purpose should be the next factor highlighted. The test/assessment should be used to identify what is happening to the client. The test/assessment should be able to identify the issues of the client, making sure it is valid and reliable when presented (APA,2022). 4

Demographic Testing Finding out a client's demographics is essential when a counselor is choosing a test for that person. Conducting an initial examination is one of the best ways to decide what kind of tests are appropriate for a client. Discussing the client's difficulties during the interview might provide information about the client, which helps identify any cultural or social needs that the client may have. The client's race, age, sex, sexual orientation, culture, and socioeconomic situation are other considerations (Cohen et al., 2022). These include elements including age, gender, cultural background, linguistic ability, and educational attainment. When preparing to adequately test customers, the wellbeing of the client is crucial. As stated by the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) we have a responsibility to greatly consider and factor in a client’s cultural background and demographics to avoid using assessment tools that could possibly lack appropriate psychometric properties for the client. Here are some steps a counselor can take to ensure that a specific test is suitable for a client's demographics: The counselor should possess a thorough understanding of the client's background. This includes their cultural context, language proficiency, educational level, and any other relevant factors. The counselor should review the normative sample of the test. This is the group of individuals that the test was standardized on. The client's demographics should be like those of the normative sample for the test results to be valid and reliable.  Some tests may have cultural biases. The counselor should be aware of these biases and consider how they might affect the test results. The counselor should evaluate the validity and reliability of the test for the client's specific demographic group. This information can usually be found in the test manual or in research articles about the test.  If the counselor is unsure about the appropriateness of a test, they can 5
consult with colleagues or supervisors who have more experience with the test or with the client's demographic group (ACA,2014). Conclusion Forms of testing and assessments play a major role in the future of the clients that counselors meet. Resources such as books, online databases, and peer reviewed journals are helpful tools that aid in the guidance to finding test that match the different present issues the client may be dealing with. The evaluations will vary depending on the individual and what the counselor is attempting to measure or assess. The test must be reliable and valid, it must be customary to the demographics of the client, and it must be unique to the individual because not all tests are equal. 6
