Running head: APPLY EVALUATION FINDINGS: DBT IN FAMILY THERAPY 1 Apply Evaluation Findings: DBT in Family Therapy Rachel Stover SWK 656 Indiana Wesleyan University
APPLY EVALUATION FINDINGS: DBT IN FAMILY THERAPY 2 Author informing Reader This article talks about how DBT not only helps the individual who is dealing with the behavioral disorder but also the family member who is taking care of the individual. “Specifically, DBT skills could improve the ability of family members to better regulate their own emotions, which may increase self-efficacy and level of control in handling stressful interpersonal situations with their family member with behavioral disorders,” (Valenstein-Mah, et al., 2016) . One thing that was interesting and one thing that was confusing One thing I thought was interesting was that DBT is not just a few treatments therapy skill, it actually is something that is at least a yearlong. It consists of weekly 1-hour individual therapy, weekly skills training group, 24-hour access to phone coaching, and weekly consultation group for therapist. Therapists have to go through an intense amount of training to be able to use DBT as a skill. I have one question and thought on this article. It talks about how this skill is used primarily with patients who have BPD, which is understandable. But why not use this skill with other behavioral disorders. Would this skill be useful in working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Bipolar Disorder? Would you use this skill? How would you use this intervention? Yes, this is a skill I would use. I would use DBT whenever I am working with a client who may have extreme behavioral disorders or mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideations. I think DBT is a useful skill to have because you can teach the individual multiple different skills to help them. Some of the goals of DBT is to teach people
APPLY EVALUATION FINDINGS: DBT IN FAMILY THERAPY 3 how to live in the moment. This is something that a lot of people often struggle with because there is often times so much going on around them. It also teaches individuals how to cope with their stress, regulate their emotions, and improve their relationships with others. These are all useful skills to teach individuals who struggle with severe behavioral disorders and/or mental health disorders. How can this intervention be modified? I do not think there is any modifications that need to be done to this intervention. I think it is a crucial skill to have as a therapist and/or social worker because you will be able to help your clients in more ways than you can without these skills. When it comes to using this skill in either individual or group settings, I think it can benefit either or. It is typically used in family therapy session which is a type of group setting. It can also be used in individual because you can still teach your client the important skills of DBT so they can live a stress-free life and be able to understand what is going on.
