Report
Advocate for a Trauma-Informed Approach in an Educational Setting   Erin R. Hughes Sanford College of Education, Northcentral University TRA-7100: Trauma-Informed Educational Practices within Community Contexts and Conditions Dr. Angela Smith January 21, 2024
Stakeholders: Teachers Administration Support Staff Educational Assistants Families Counselors Community Members YOUTH/CHILDREN
What is a trauma informed approach and why is it necessary? More than half of all young people have reported exposure to violence or abuse. By the age of 16, more than two thirds will have experienced a potentially traumatic event. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) impact a child’s cognitive abilities and impede their development and limit academic potential. Promoting trauma-sensitive school approaches has the greatest potential to positively impact all students, regardless of trauma history. TIC provides: A deeper understanding of key-trauma concepts. A greater understanding of trauma’s effects on behavior. How to understand and prevent vicarious trauma. De-escalation practices for educators and students. RESOURCES! (Cpi, 2021)

Incarcerated Youth Statistics: Roughly 60,000 youth under the age of 18 in the United States are incarcerated in youth jail/prisons On any given day an estimated 250,000 youth are tried, sentenced, or incarcerated as adults, this does not include those that are on the youth side of the system. Research shows that confining youth to jail or prison will cut them off from family, disrupt their education, and expose them to further trauma and violence, all of which have lifelong negative effects. ( Keep Youth Out of Adult Prisons , n.d.)
Working with those that have experienced trauma, no matter what type or when, is one of the most important jobs in the world. Children are still developing physically and mentally and brains are still maturing. Teachers/educators have an important job with these youth and can have perhaps the biggest impact overall. Educators need to partner with everyone that is involved with the youth to ensure a positive outcome. Close to 80 percent of the youth who are incarcerated will be rearrested within 3 years of being released ( Reducing Juvenile Recidivism - CSG Justice Center , 2021).
Community Involvement Community involvement is crucial for the individual and the healing process. The community knows what has worked in the past and what has not. Members of the community also understand the culture better than anyone else and can help others understand. It is important to have the support of those that are surrounding the individual and in some cases who the individual will be going home with. Teachers are not the only ones that can teach; in fact we learn more from parents and those that raise us in our first few years because that is who surrounds us from birth. By educating the community and providing resources we can give a better chance at healing and a successful life for children.
