1 Questions for a Trauma Specialist Erin R. Hughes Sanford College of Education, Northcentral University TRA-7100: Trauma-Informed Educational Practices within Community Contexts and Conditions Dr. Angela Smith December 3, 2023
2 After teaching in the public school system for 15 years I took an opportunity that would allow me to still be in education, but in a much different capacity. I currently teach at a committed youth facility where I teach youth ages 10 to the day before they turn 21 who have been sentenced by a judge to serve due to a crime that was committed. I chose this position because of my current degree plan. Each of the youth I teach have experienced some type of trauma that has had a serious impact on him. My husband is a warden on the adult side of corrections. My plan for this assignment is to either work with a social worker at my facility or his, while still focusing on the youth side. I will use my information and research to create a presentation with a potential audience of the staff for a professional development. A trauma specialist is crucial in the education world and helping to understand how to work with individuals who have experienced trauma. Trauma has an impact on everyone, not just the victim. Trauma specialists help to ease the burdens students who have experienced trauma carry with them through direct treatment with behavioral modifications and giving teachers the necessary tools to help (Jermaineh, 2020). Trauma informed specialists are truly not ordinary individuals; they must be able to help those who have experienced trauma, work with young children who have experienced the unimaginable, and still be able to remain unbiased. Some of the important traits that a trauma specialist must embody are unconditional positive regard, acceptance, and support, strong affect tolerance which means the ability to tolerate negative and positive emotions, and overall good boundaries and communication skills ( The Top 3 Traits a Trauma Specialist Should Have , n.d.). Questions I would ask a Trauma Specialist:
3 1. Have you seen a correlation between trauma, the amount of youth that have been traumatized, and the geographic area? 2. What research theory do you best identify your practices with? 3. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Trauma Therapists need therapy. (Please explain your answer/thinking.) 4. Why is self-care important not only for the individual but also the therapist? What is your self-care? 5. Healthy boundaries with individuals is crucial. How do you ensure healthy boundaries are created and adhered to? 6. How has this job had a positive and potentially negative impact on your life? 7. How would you help someone emotionally and physically prepare for this line of work? 8. How do you handle the aspect of confidentiality? 9. When working with individuals, what aspects of therapy are universal when working with children? 10.Trauma has long-term, life altering effects on individuals. How would you help someone accept therapy wither for a family member or the individual directly when they are refusing? 11. Have you worked with an educator who refuses to accept the education, tools, and resources that are necessary to help children who have experienced trauma? What happened?
