What is TRAUMA? Trauma is a pervasive problem. It results from exposure to an incident or series of events that are emotionally disturbing or life-threatening with lasting adverse effects on the individuals functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, and/or spiritual well-being ( What Is Trauma? - Trauma-Informed Care Implementation Resource Center , 2022c).

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Although trauma can occur at any age, it has particularly debilitating long-term effects on children’s developing brains. These are known as adverse childhood experiences or ACEs. ACEs are common across all sectors of society, but research shows that ACEs are elevated within certain populations such as: Those that identify as black, Hispanic, or multiracial People with less than a high school education People with low income Those that are unemployed or unable to work The LGBTQ community ( What Is Trauma? - Trauma-Informed Care Implementation Resource Center , 2022c) (Simandou, 2022)
Culture and Trauma Trauma intersects in many different ways with culture, history, race, gender, location, and language; it is crucial to reduce barriers, overcome stigma, address social adversities, strengthen families, and encourage positive ethnic identity (Peterson, 2018). Ultimately, culture defines how one reacts, deals with, works through trauma, and accepts help.
Think about it… Culture can be a beautiful and powerful force, but it can also perpetuate unhelpful norms ( How Minority Communities Are Affected by Trauma and Stressor Disorders | High Focus Centers , n.d.). Everyone experiences life differently and therefore experiences affect people differently. However, when culture is added into the equation the way in which trauma affects a person changes significantly.

Looking through a cultural lens: Culture is who we are; what has made us who we are and our values, morals and ethics. When it comes to culture and trauma, here are things to remember: Some cultures may interpret trauma as a punishment, a test, a rite of passage, or a special message. How families interpret and respond to trauma influences how they cope. Some cultures are more hesitant to ask or even accept help. Not everyone interprets everything in the same way. Asking for help could be interpreted as a sign of weakness. Some could be physically or emotionally punished for talking about trauma. ( Culturally-Sensitive Trauma-Informed Care | Patient Centered Care and Trauma Informed Care for Pediatric Patients - HEALTHCARE TOOLBOX , n.d.) REMEMBER: Your way is not always the best way, be open to understanding and learning about others and culture.

Findings: There is an abundance of research that supports the findings that minority groups are more susceptible to trauma and higher ACEs scores. The previous tables only affirm what was previously thought and there is no denying the truth; minorities experience more trauma. This is not to say that other communities, races, or groups do not experience trauma or that the trauma experienced is not as severe, but rather the overall percentage is higher with minority groups. In order to provide help, education, resources and more we must understand the community dynamics and the culture so that we can make a positive impact and instill trust in all involved.
We MUST remember that: It is important to remember that trauma affects everyone. It is not only the victim that experiences the trauma but those that surround the victim. Trauma affects each person differently in the initial strike and through retraumatization. No two people experience trauma in the same exact manner.
