Long Term Goals The first long-term goal for John is to reduce his symptoms of depression. This will ensure he feels less distressed throughout the day and encourage him to become motivated. The second long-term goal is to reduce his alcohol consumption. His drinking harms his health and family. We must identify healthy coping skills as he aims to drink less. The third long-term goal is to help John reconnect with his family. He notes that his marriage is in jeopardy and he often becomes angry with his son. He must have a strong support system as he works on his treatment goals. Short Term Goals The first short-term goal for John is to identify the most distressing symptom of his depression and brainstorm ways to reduce the intensity. For example, if he discusses sleep being the most problematic aspect of depression, we can talk about implementing healthy sleep habits. The second short-term goal is utilizing the transtheoretical stages of change model to identify John’s readiness to decrease alcohol consumption. This will help guide the therapeutic approach and determine the next steps. The third short-term goal is to have a family therapy session with John’s wife and son. This will have to be planned accordingly and may not happen until John has begun to gain momentum with his goals and develop motivation. Theory Application From the humanistic theories, I chose to apply the Person-Centered Theory to John’s case. According to Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian Therapy) written by professors Lucy Yao and Rian Kabir, person-centered therapy is an effective approach for depression as it is non-directive and empathy-based (Yao & Kabir, 2023). I would utilize this approach by establishing unconditional positive regard and helping John target maladaptive behaviors. One intervention to reach the goal related to reconnecting with his family would be to utilize reflection of feelings and congruence within a session (Yao & Kabir, 2023). When John has his family session, it will be important to hear his wife and son’s feelings. I want to process this in session through reflections and provide my authentic reactions through congruence. References Yao, L., & Kabir, R. (2023). Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian Therapy).
