The Importance of Literacy Part 1: Book Activity Choose a children's book that you are familiar with and have used either in your classroom or with children outside of the classroom. Describe how you have incorporated this book into your classroom. Reread the book and suggest at least two different activities you can do with the book to extend children's learning and encourage engagement. Incorporate at least one multicultural component. Part 2: Literacy Discussion In about two paragraphs, answer the following: Why is it important to foster a healthy relationship with literacy at a young age? How can you use literacy to promote pro-social behaviors, like empathy? In your opinion, are multicultural components necessary to incorporate? Why or why not? Part 1: Book Activity Stellaluna by Janell Cannon is a great children’s book to read to students that can help students learn new vocabulary and help improve their literacy skills. I have read it to my kids and have incorporated this book into my classroom during interactive read aloud reading times. This is a great practice as it allows me keep the students attentions and to help them focus while I ask querying questions to ensure that they are following along and understanding the key parts of the story. This helps me guarantee that the students are learning what they are meant to from the material. Upon rereading the book, there are a few activities that I can do with the book to extend children's learning and encourage engagement. One would be (after the reading) to ask the students to draw a picture of a bat and a bird, and then list the differences between them- how they look, what the eat, when they fly, and where they live. Have the students explain the similarities and differences between them in a Venn Diagram. Then, as a class, we can discuss the differences and similarities between birds and bats. In the book, a baby bat named Stellaluna is separated from her mother and is raised by birds. This activity will helps students consider the differences and similarities between the two species, assess the students’ attention span, and test and improve the students’ cognitive thinking skills. Another activity that I can do with this book
(during the reading) is to have students write down a cause and effect timeline- listing the main plot points and events that happened in the story and then writing down what caused these events and how these events affected the character in the story. This activity will help improve students’ understanding of cause and effect and help improve their critical thinking skills. There are many activities that can be done using this book. One activity that could be done with this book that incorporates a multicultural component would be to ask the students how the differences between species can parallel the differences between cultures. Have the students get into small groups and write down these differences, and then write down the differences and similarities between themselves. This activity will help students think more deeply on culture and how it impacts us as individuals. Part 2: Literacy Discussion It is important for children to foster a healthy relationship with literacy at a young age for many reasons. Having a healthy relationship with literacy from a young age will benefit children as they grow into adults. The skills that they learn will help them throughout the rest of their lives. Literacy helps stimulate brain development and support cognitive and critical thinking skills such as curiosity, imagination, problem-solving, observation, attention and concentration, inference, analysis, explanation, evaluation, and many more. Reading can help foster a love of learning in children. Literacy helps set students up for future academic success. It also helps build independence and self-esteem. Literacy and language skills are connected. Improving literary skills helps students improve their language and communication skills, and vice versa. Reading not only helps improve language development, but also promotes social and emotional development. Reading helps children understand complex emotions and reactions. Literacy promotes pro-social behaviors such as empathy/sympathy, selflessness, and thoughtfulness. Reading helps promote these behaviors by offering examples of sharing, volunteer work, and positive traits like kindness and altruism. Stories and books focus on main protagonists that are the hero of the story. These heroes offer positive examples and role models to children to look up to and try to embody. In my opinion, multicultural components are necessary to incorporate in almost all literacy components. This is because incorporating culture into stories helps make readers feel welcomed, accepted, and appreciated. It can also help form understanding of culture, spread cultural awareness, and increase curiosity of diversity and cultural differences. Multicultural components also help spread acceptance and understanding of others. When students are learning about the differences between cultures, they are learning unbiased facts, characteristics, and qualities before being exposed to prejudice. This helps children be more open-minded and less likely to fall into the idea of stereotypes and racial profiling. Multicultural components can also help students learn better by helping them connect to what they are reading. This helps them to better understand the material and be more excited about the concepts they are learning. Incorporating cultures into lessons and multicultural components in the curriculum helps create a classroom environment that is inclusive and celebrates diversity, equality, and equity while helping children connect to their education and connect with others. This helps them learn, grow, make new friends, and become more understanding and knowledgeable of others.
