Psychology 305: Social Psychology Week Two Assignment Due Sunday, June 20 Worth 20 points Part One (worth 15 points): Cognitive dissonance, in a nutshell, is the experience of discomfort we feel when an attitude we hold does not agree with either our behavior or a second attitude. This discomfort often leads us to changing an attitude to minimize the dissonance. The Week Two PowerPoint file provides many examples of psychological experiments that show evidence of attitude change due to cognitive dissonance, but I want you to see an example that occurred outside the psychology lab. Please watch the following video (estimated running time 42 minutes) and then answer the following questions. Each question is worth 5 points. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv0HPfFS-gU **Note: this is the only free and widely available version of this episode I could find. It’s been sped up a bit on YouTube. I prefer to slow down the audio a bit (go to the little gear icon on the lower right corner of the video, click on Playback speed and adjust it to 0.75). You do you! A.) What attitudes did David hold about Muslims and the Islamic faith at the beginning of the show? His view on women were based on their appearance (they wear sheaths over their head and face) and he expressed how he view the men with guns and at war. He saw them as different because he views his God as the only God “no man should place any God before me”. He didn’t know much but what is told to him by society; i.e Muslims are terrorists. B.) At what points do you think David experienced mental discomfort due to cognitive dissonance? What makes you think David was experiencing “mental discomfort”? What were the inconsistencies (between two attitudes or an attitude and a behavior) that caused the dissonance? When he was told that he would have to perform a Muslim prayer. He spoke about how it goes against his faith and experience a panic attack because he was compromising his moral principles. C.) How did David resolve the dissonance he experienced? Please be specific. He sought lessons and information to understand their faith more by visiting the Islamic center. He sought new Imams and learned how to speak Arabic and the gender roles. He learned how Muslims have fun and how to prepare halal meat. He embraced the faith and accepted his Jihad. He changed his views on Muslim. Part Two (worth 5 points): Please provide answers for each of the following five questions. I am looking for your best guesses on these questions—please don’t use the
Internet to research the answers; just provide whatever answer comes to mind. Each item is worth 2 points. 1.
