PSYC 430 A UTISM C ASE S TUDY T EMPLATE DSM Application: (8 points): List the DSM criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Next to each criterion, detail the specific symptoms that match Daniel’s symptoms. The DSM application should be thoughtful, thorough and detailed. If no symptoms match a particular criterion, write N/A next to that criterion. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2016), the following are the signs of autism: Lacking social and emotional reciprocity, as shown by an inability to start or react to encounters an atypical social approach and a lack of normal back-and-forth communication. N/A Social difficulties stemming from a lack of facial emotions and other nonverbal clues, such as inappropriate eye contact and body language, trouble interpreting and employing gestures, or a complete absence of such signs. Although Daniel avoided making direct eye contact, he would respond to questions and comments with nonverbal cues. Similarly, Daniel was always twiddling his thumbs. Having difficulty adapting their conduct to varied social contexts, working together with others during make-believe play, or making connections with their peers owing to a lack of interest or passion. When Daniel becomes mad, he either loses his temper or behaves violently. What would you consider the clinical skills or attributes most essential to successful therapy for this patient? Allowing Daniel to talk about his feelings, particularly when he's furious, can help him healthily deal with them, rather than always resorting to fight-or-flight. Instead of responding negatively to Daniel's aggressor, Ryan, I would talk to him about other ways to express himself. I'd also show him how to use techniques like meditation and counting backwards from a positive number to calm down. What would be your therapeutic goals for this patient? My goal is that by encouraging Daniel to seek out and engage in therapy; I can help him become more effective in his responses to things he does not enjoy and more resilient in the face of things he cannot control. Another goal is developing interpersonal skills like Daniel's friendship with Justin. He can avoid Ryan and his antics if he puts more stock on Justin's friendship and support. What further information would you want to have to assist in structuring this patient’s treatment?
PSYC 430 It would have been helpful to hear from Daniel's mother to understand who he is in the context of his family. By asking her about the onset and treatment of Daniel's symptoms, she may assist the counsellor in getting a clearer picture of Daniel's situation. Are there specific assessment tools you would use? The oral question evaluations. Miller Function and Participation Scale (MFUN) What would be the rationale for the use of these tools? The counsellor will better grasp Daniel's symptoms and an accurate evaluation of his situation with the aid of the questionnaire. The interview gave the impression that Daniel received more spoken explanations than written ones. What is your conceptualization of this patient's personality, behaviour, affective state, and cognitions? Daniel's personality, in my conceptualization, is mute or nonverbal until provoked. Daniel is careful and modest while observing his conduct, but when he becomes enraged, he enters a state of anger. Additionally, when he is irritated, he repeatedly acts out. Cognitively, though, he is more stable; he never speaks until persuaded or pressured to, like when the interviewer compelled him to talk about Ryan, and he never acts aggressively unless provoked. Bible Application Question: (5 points): Discuss this case and disorder from a Biblical perspective using at least 1 Scripture reference cited in APA format (direct quotes from the Bible do not count towards the length requirement). 75 words minimum is required. According to John 9:1-3, "And as Jesus was going along, he noticed a man who had been born blind. And his followers probed him with the question, "Master, who did sin, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Both he and his parents are innocent, Jesus said (John 9:1–9:3), "but that the works of God should be made manifest in him." The understanding of this scripture is crucial because many people wrongly assume that God is punishing them or their children for sins they committed in the past. References
