2 Introduction As a therapist, it's important to be prepared for a follow-up session with a client, especially when specific interventions have been used. In this case, Bill has previously undergone a session where I have used the techniques of Progressive Muscle Relaxation and journaling as interventions. In this follow-up session, I will set the agenda, review homework, discuss any issues, and apply appropriate interventions as needed. Bridge session Before diving into the follow-up session, it's important to establish a connection with the client and create a safe and comfortable environment. In this bridge session, I will start by greeting Bill and asking him how he has been since our last meeting. I will provide a brief overview of what we will be discussing in the session, including the agenda and any interventions that we may use. I will then ask Bill if he has any questions or concerns before we begin. It's essential to address any issues that the client may have upfront to ensure that they are comfortable and ready to proceed with the session. Next, I will ask Bill if he has any updates on his progress since our last meeting. This will allow me to gauge how he has been doing and identify any areas that may require further attention. I will listen actively and offer empathy and support throughout this discussion. Lastly, I will remind Bill of the confidentiality of our sessions and encourage him to be open and honest about his thoughts and feelings. It's crucial to establish trust with the client to ensure that they feel safe sharing their experiences with me as their therapist. By setting the stage in this bridge session, we can proceed with the follow-up session with a clear agenda and mutual understanding of what we hope to achieve. Set the Agenda: At the beginning of the follow-up session with Bill, I will set the agenda for the session. I will start by briefly reviewing the goals that we set in the previous session and then outline the areas that we will be covering in this session. The agenda for the session will include: 1. Reviewing the homework that was assigned in the previous session, which involved practicing Progressive Muscle Relaxation and journaling.

Discussing any issues that Bill has encountered since our last meeting, including any new stressors or conflicts that have arisen, any feelings of anxiety or depression, or any other concerns that he may have. 3. Applying additional interventions that will aid in his progress, which may include techniques such as Cognitive Restructuring, Relaxation Techniques, and Goal Setting. Review Homework: After setting the agenda, the next step in the session will be to review the homework that was assigned in the previous session. I will start by asking Bill how often he was able to practice Progressive Muscle Relaxation and journaling. I will encourage him to be honest about his experience and offer any support that he may need to achieve his goals. If Bill encountered any difficulties in practicing the assigned exercises, I will use this as an opportunity to identify any barriers that may be hindering his progress. For instance, I will ask him if he found it difficult to make time for the exercises, or if he encountered any resistance in engaging in the exercises due to feelings of discomfort or unfamiliarity. I will also ask Bill if he noticed any changes in his emotional or physical state as a result of practicing the exercises. For instance, did he notice a reduction in stress or tension? Did he experience any positive emotions or feelings of well-being? If Bill was able to practice the exercises regularly and noticed positive changes, I will offer positive reinforcement and encouragement to continue practicing them. Discuss Issues: After reviewing the homework, I will ask Bill if there were any issues that he has encountered since our last meeting that he would like to discuss. I will listen actively to what he has to say and offer empathy and support. If Bill mentions any specific issues, I will explore them further to gain a deeper understanding of the problem. For instance, if he mentions feeling anxious about a work-related project, I will ask him to describe the situation in more detail, including the thoughts and feelings associated with the situation.

4 I will then use this as an opportunity to apply appropriate interventions. For instance, if Bill's anxiety is related to negative thought patterns, I may use Cognitive Restructuring to help him identify and challenge these thoughts. Alternatively, if the issue is related to physical tension, I may use Relaxation Techniques to help him reduce his physical symptoms. Interventions In the previous session, we used Progressive Muscle Relaxation and journaling as interventions for Bill. In this follow-up session, we can continue to build on these techniques and introduce new ones to help him progress further. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: We can continue to practice Progressive Muscle Relaxation together in this session. This technique involves tensing and releasing different muscle groups in the body to help reduce physical and emotional tension (Greenbaum & Benedetto, 2019). I will guide Bill through the exercise, and he can practice it at home regularly. Journaling: Journaling is another useful tool for self-reflection and gaining insight into one's emotions and thoughts. I will encourage Bill to continue journaling regularly and provide him with prompts or topics that he can write about if he needs ideas. We can review his journal together to identify any patterns or themes that may be affecting his mental well-being. Cognitive Restructuring: Cognitive Restructuring is a CBT technique that helps to identify and challenge negative thought patterns (Bilbrey et al., 2022). I will introduce this technique to Bill and encourage him to identify any negative thoughts he may be having. We can then work together to develop more positive and realistic ways of thinking. Relaxation Techniques: In addition to Progressive Muscle Relaxation, we can introduce other relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, or guided imagery. These techniques can be used in combination to help Bill reduce anxiety and stress (Toussaint et al., 2021). Goal Setting: Setting goals can help individuals identify what they want to achieve and take steps to achieve them. We can work together to identify Bill's long-term and short-
5 term goals and break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. This can help him feel more in control and motivated to make progress. Conclusion In this follow-up session, I will use a range of techniques and interventions to help Bill achieve his goals and improve his overall mental well-being. By reviewing his homework, discussing any issues, and applying appropriate interventions, I will be able to assess his progress and adjust our treatment plan as necessary. As a therapist, my ultimate goal is to help my clients achieve their full potential and live happy, healthy lives.
